The Inside Scoop On Baby Boom Baby

Tommy Koenig has always combined the worlds of stand up comedy, theatre and rock and roll music in his many one man shows over the years.

And now he’s done it again with his latest one man musicomedy “Baby Boom Baby’ which just made its US debut at The Bellmore Theatre in Bellmore, Long Island, NY on January 20, 2013. Here’s some of what people had to say :

“The show was awesome.”

“What an amazing talent”

“He’s like a combination of Jerry Lewis, George Carlin and Soupy Sales.”

“Kudos to Tommy for a magnificent show spanning the decades with his patter and spot on renditions of musical greats through his own parodies!

Brought my friend's 17 yr old granddaughter and I'm thrilled to say that she got most of the musical references!”

“Hilarious and full of energy. I hope to see "Baby Boom Baby" on HBO or SHOWTIME. I am telling all my friends how much I laughed. The ending was deep, loved that too.”

Tommy’s first one man show, ‘The Living Experiment’, began in 1987 and ran thru 1992 with extended runs in NY and LA.

The New York Post called him ‘A major talent’. The New York Times called him ‘A master of caricature’ in this show that The LA Weekly called ‘Hilarious. Hysterical. A steady stream of Fun’.

His next project, a variety show in the style of the old TV shows hosted by and starring Milton Berle, Jackie Gleason and Red Skelton, called ‘The Tommy Koenig Show’, began as a series of benefits for the Red Cross right after 9/11 and ran until 2004.

It was voted ‘Best Comedy of 2002’ by Theatremania.

The Tommy Koenig Show’ was invited to The Santa Barbara Theatre in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico in 2009.

It was there, in Mexico, that the idea for ‘Baby Boom Baby’ began.

Tommy said, “For years I’d wanted to do a show called ‘Baby Boom Baby’, telling my personal story and the story of my generation through the rock and roll music that related to other boomers like me. Doing impressions and parodies of all the rock musicians through the different eras that I had been making fun of in my act together in a show with some originally written songs and some things from my stand up comedy.”

Tommy returned to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico in 2010 for a successful month-long debut run of ‘Baby Boom Baby’ which received wild acclaim.

“ Tommy Koenig is a one-man Woodstock”

“Hits the heart as well as the funny bone”

Upon his return to the States, Tommy teamed up with Gary Smith, who for over 30 years had owned and run The Brokerage Pub in Bellmore, Long Island, New York.

The Brokerage Pub was not only Tommy’s home club on Long Island (Tommy is a Far Rockaway, Queens native) but Gary ran The Brokerage Pub with a spirit that harkened back to a time when being in show business felt more down-to-earth and home-grown.

Many performers, like Tommy, honed their craft in that room under Gary’s watchful eye.

Gary was always one step ahead of the next wave in comedy entertainment.

He has found a new venue, which has become his new home base to create from, The Bellmore Theatre, in Bellmore, Long Island, New York. Tommy saw the space at a benefit Gary had for the late comedian Vince Dantona.

Gary was bringing in ‘concert-style performances’ of local favorites and well-known entertainers, like Rob Bartlett, to The Bellmore Theater. “I knew this was the place for ‘Baby Boom Baby’ and fortunately Gary agreed.” said Tommy.

So on Sunday January 20, 2013, (after postponing the original date in Novembver 2012 due to Hurricane Sandy) Tommy Koenig and Gary Smith, veterans of show business for over 60 combined years, brought it all together and brought it home to Long Island, with the American debut of ‘Baby Boom Baby’ at The Bellmore Theatre.

Tommy Koenig has always been sort of a Rock ‘n Roll Comic as an opening act for bands and singers in Rock venues worldwide.

He began opening for Jazz and Cabaret greats like Lionel Hampton, Damita Jo and James Coco in clubs like The Copa Cabana and The Playboy Club in NYC.

He was one of the few comics featured on NBC’s ‘Don Kirschner’s Rock Concert’, appearing with David Bowie and Rick James.

He opened for Warren Zevon (who called himself ‘The guy who has to follow Tommy Koenig’), Alvin Lee, PF Sloane at intimate rock venues like The Bottom Line in NYC and The Country Club in LA.

He toured in stadiums and arenas with Bonnie Raitt, Dave Mason, and Los Lobos, and in auditoriums like The Santa Monica Civic Center where he opened for Joan Jett – and lived to tell of it!

He toured rock theatres with National Lampoon’s ‘If We’re Late, Start Without Us’ and ‘Class of ’86’ (also a Showtime special).

He recorded his own rock and roll LP album ‘The Real Story’ with guest Larry Fast (inventor of The Moog Synthesizer) and wrote 4 original songs – a hit on college radio playlists.

He was Stiff Records’ “go-to comic” for promotion of new groups by deejays, unbeknownst to radio listeners and dance clubbers worldwide.

Tommy co-wrote the single hit song ‘Poppa Chubby’ for P-Funk/Talking Heads Bernie Worrell on his CD ‘Funk of Ages’.

He starred in several MTV music videos but most notably as “Mary” in The Run DMC video “Mary, Mary”.

All this in addition to an active TV and film career and constant touring as a stand-up comic.

Tommy recently appeared on ‘The Onion News Network’ on IFC, guest starred on one of the last episodes of ABC’s ‘Boston Legal’, was part of The Mel Brooks movie ensembles, “Dracula: Dead And Loving It” and ‘Robin Hood: Men in Tights”.

Tommy Koenig has headlined at Brad Garrett’s Comedy Club at The Tropicana, Las Vegas, NV and is a regular headliner at The Mohegan Sun Resort in CT and Turning Stone Casino, NY and throughout the country.

Tommy Koenig is working on taking “Baby Boom Baby” nationally and internationally in 2013 and beyond.
