Weinman's Hardware to Close After 91 Years in Bellmore

The store on Bedford Avenue will shutter in the coming weeks.

Just a few months after its 91st anniversary, Weinman's Hardware will close.

Owner Roy Weinman said that he does not have an exact close date, but said that the business will shutter before the year ends.

"The sales are not there and the overhead is high," the 88-year-old said. "I chose to retire, it's time."

Weinman's Hardware was first owned by Weinman's father, Meyer Weinman, who opened the store across the street from its current location on Aug. 26, 1922.

Two years after the store opened, Weinman was born. After serving in World War II, he took partial ownership of the store. In the late 50s, he took full ownership after his father started suffering from health problems.

In 1935, the business moved to its current location at 106 Bedford Ave.

"I've had a lot of fun and enjoyed going trough a lot of different phases," he said.

Weinman said that after his business closes, he plans to keep busy.

"I am very active in the Lions Club and I am going to remain there," he said. "I will be around."
