Whiz Kid: Derek Weinberger

A column that will honor the top students in the Bellmore community.

This week's Whiz Kid is Kennedy's Derek Weinberger!

  • Name: Derek Weinberger
  • Age: 17
  • School: Kennedy High School
  • Accomplishment: Donates time to charity and helps around the community.
  • Key to Awesomeness: Weinberger is a hard worker, especially on the weekends. He walked in the fundraiser two weekends ago and raised money for charity. He is now helping his mom raise money for a handicapped person that needs a new wheel chair and van.
  • Weinberger is also quite the athlete. In early May, he hit a shot from five feet behind half court at the halftime buzzer of a Bellmore-Merrick Basketball League game to propel his senior boys team to the championship. The team was in a tight game, up by one with less than a second on the clock and in one fluid motion, Weinberget accepted the pass, turned, and accurately drained the shot.

Know a great kid who made Eagle Scout or did your local soccer team take the
championship? They may be our next Patch Whiz Kid honoree.

Each week, Bellmore Patch will seek suggestions from readers for individual kids, youth groups, teens, and even sports teams that wow us with their accomplishments. We want to hear about these amazing children and teens and select one each week as the Patch Whiz Kid.
