Bellmore-Merrick High Schools Named Among Nation's Most Challenging

Mepham, Kennedy and Calhoun High Schools have been ranked nationally in the “Most Challenging High Schools” list published by the Washington Post.

Calhoun came in at number 54 in the state and 638 nationally. Kennedy came in at 60th in New York, while they were 716 nationally. Lastly, Mepham came in at number 61 in the state, while they were measured at 722 in the country.

A total of 1,933 high schools were ranked throughout the nation on an index the Washington Post determined using a ratio of graduating high school seniors to the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Advanced International Certificate of Education tests given in a single year.

The rankings also take into consideration the number of families that qualify for lunch subsidies and the percentage of graduates who passed one or more college-level exams during their high school careers.

Jericho High School was ranked the top school on Long Island with an overall New York State rank of No. 2 and a No. 80 national ranking.
