Bellmore Students Turn Back the Clocks

Fifth graders at Shore Road Schol travel back to different decades in performance of original play "It's a Shore Thing."

Taking their audience back in time and telling the story of Bellmore’s Shore Road School, the fifth-graders in Jennifer Desmond’s, Regina Harten’s and Chris Merz’s classes performed their original play “It’s a Shore Thing.”

The story opens with two current-day students digging in the school garden when they come across a time capsule filled with yearbooks dating back to the 1960s. As the students peruse the yearbooks, they are taken back in time to see what life was like for students in the ’60s, ’70s, ’80s, ’90s and ’00s.

Throughout the play, the audience is treated to scenes including a girls’ home economics class in which they learn how to sit like proper ladies; a boys’ glee club practice in which they sing Three Dog Night’s “Joy to the World”; track meet competitions between the three Bellmore Schools – Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center, Winthrop Avenue and Shore Road – when they were all still K-6 buildings; and the extravagance of the 1990s, when the sixth-grade dance included a red carpet and limo rides.
