UPDATE: Fire Shuts Down Sunrise Highway

Two people were transported to the hospital with unknown injuries.

A tanker fire broke out on Sunrise Highway in Bellmore late Tuesday night between Auto Zone and the Harley Davidson dealership.

There were no injuries and as of 1:20 a.m. Wednesday, Sunrise Highway in the vicinity of Newbridge Road was closed. 

According to police, a fuel truck traveling eastbound on Sunrise Highway, struck the rear of a vehicle stopped at a red light at Newbridge Road around 11:52 p.m. 

The truck turned on its side and continued east on Sunrise Highway, spilling fuel, coming to a stop at Brevoort Place.

The fuel caught fire causing an undetermined amount of damage to parked cars and property in the area.  

The drivers of both cars were removed to area hospitals with unknown injuries at this time.  The investigation is ongoing.

Fire departments from Bellmore, North Bellmore, Merrick, North Merrick, East Meadow, Wantagh, Massapequa and other nearby departments were on the scene.
