Bellmore Resident Victimized by Granny Scam

Two more incidents of the "granny scam" have been reported by the Nassau County Police Department in Bellmore and Massapequa.

According to Amanda Lamberti, the Seventh Precinct's intelligence analyst, at 10:30 a.m. on April 10, an unknown caller phoned a Bellmore woman that lives on Bell Court and pretended to be her grandchild.

"The complainant stated that they are in trouble and need money to be wired," Lamberti said.

The woman sent more than $1,000 to what she thought was her grandchild, only to later find out it was a scam.

Just three days later on April 14, a Massapequa resident who lives on North Pine Drive was targeted, and they gave $5,700 to the suspect.

"The victims are feeding right into this," Lamberti said. "The caller says "Grandma"? Then they respond with "Bobby, is that you?"

Anyone who receives a call that seems to be a scam like this is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.
