Students Compete to be Mepham's Principal for a Day

The youngster that raises the most money for St. Baldrick's will get to spend a whole school day with Michael Harrington.

Not only do Mepham High Schoolers have the opportunity to shave their heads to raise money in the fight against children's cancer, but they are competing to be the school's next principal as well.

At least for a day.

Principal Michael Harrington told Patch that the student that raises the most funds for the St. Baldrick's Foundation will get to spend the day with him going through the day-to-day operations.

"Each person signs up online to either be a shavee, a donor or a participant," Harrington said. "The student who raises the most money in the whole campaign will spend the day being principal."

Harrington added that includes going into meetings, doing classroom visits and things of that sort. When asked if he would answer to that student, he said "probably."

As of Thursday morning, Mepham has raised $7,420, which is 14 percent of their $50,000 goal. Samantha H. leads the way with $1,325 raised, while Michael J. is second with $695.

"To me, it's one of the most meaningful fundraisers that we've done," Harrington said. "It was very successful a few years ago when we ran the campaign here. When students, parents and teachers are coming together to raise money for such a worthy cause, it's just a reflection of where our priorities are."
