Bellmore Kids Create Blankets for Soldiers

Editor's Note: This article was written by representatives of the Bellmore School District.

In the spirit of community service and giving back to those protecting our freedoms overseas, the students at Bellmore’s Winthrop Avenue School participated in the Blankets of Hope program.

Through the program, the students created 10 fleece blankets that will be sent to military hospitals and veterans centers through the nonprofit Soldiers’ Angels.

Organized by Jericho High School junior Jillian Leibowitz, daughter of fourth-grade Winthrop teacher Jody Leibowitz, the fourth-grade Winthrop students helped create the blankets and signed cards that will be sent along with the packages.

“We talk so much about our district core values in class – teamwork, respect, integrity, trust and dedication – and this is a great way to put them into action while giving back,” Leibowitz said.

Added fourth-grader Sydney Mazza, “This project is awesome. I really feel like I’m helping people.”
