Kennedy Boys Volleyball Wins First LI Title

John F. Kennedy High School Boys Volleyball continued its undefeated season Tuesday by winning the school’s first ever Class II Long Island Boys Volleyball Championship.

Gary Anderson led the way for JFK with 18 kills, two aces and 27 assists in the winning effort. After Kennedy (22-0) won the first game 25-19, Eastport-South Manor responded with a 25-23 win. The Cougars didn’t let the loss phase them, and they got back in the win column with a 25-22 victory, and then Kennedy closed things out with a 25-20 result.

"It's fantastic," coach Dennis Ringel told Newsday. "It couldn't have happened to a better group of guys. They were so dedicated all year. They worked hard for this moment."

Steven Gassert had 18 kills and 11 digs. Gary Anderson had 14 kills and 24 assists. Ron Gutman had 10 kills and five blocks. Matt Murphy added 14 digs and eight kills and and served 95 percent. Adam Lowell had 13 digs. Jake Sherman had 31 assists and 13 digs. Justin Feigeles had seven blocks and five kills.

"To play the way they played going into a fifth set after playing four matches in four days is just incredible," Ringel added. "It really shows the maturity and character of this team."

Kennedy will head on to the State Final against Lake Shore on Sunday at Glens Falls at 4 p.m.
