Bellmore-Merrick Schools Closed Thursday

It’s been days since Hurricane Sandy closed schools in Bellmore and Merrick, but now a Nor’Easter has forced school officials to close again on Thursday.

The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District, Merrick School District, Bellmore School District, North Bellmore School District and North Merrick School District have all closed shop.

“Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District is closed Thursday, Nov. 8 due to inclement weather,” Bellmore-Merrick Centrl High School District Superintendent Henry Kiernan wrote on the district’s emergency contact Facebook page.

“While we hate to lose another day, we always place the safety of our students and our staff first,” North Bellmore Superintendent Arnold Goldstein said in a call to parents.

Bellmore Superintendent Dr. Joseph Famularo added that power continues to be down at the Shore Road School, and the District email is still not operational.

“The weather forecast indicates inclement weather through the night,” Merrick Superintendent Dr. Dominick Palma said. “We are concerned that travel in the morning will be difficult and that the community and schools may experience additional power outages as a result of the Nor’Easter.”

"It seems particularly cruel that this storm has come so close to the major hurricane that we just experienced," North Merrick Superintendent David Feller said. "Stay safe and we will hopefully see you and the children on Friday."
