Bellmore Resident Spearheads 'Honor Flight' Movie Showing

The movie spotlights those who served during WWII.

World War II Veteran Salvatore Perrone turns 94 next month, and he just recently received his high school diploma.

Perrone never finished high school because he served for four years in the Navy on the U.S.S. Brownsville out of San Francisco. His son, Joseph Perrone, a Bellmore resident, recently learned that the diploma was available due to Salvatore's honorable discharge.

Last year, Salvatore took an "Honor Flight", which is a free trip from Republic Airport in Farmingdale to Washington D.C. to see the memorial built in honor of those who served during WWII. Now, a movie has been created to spotlight this "Honor Flight", and Joseph Perrone has spearheaded a movement to bring that movie to AMC Loews Nassau Metroplex 10 in Levittown.

“Because of his age and everything else going on, I couldn’t get my father to come in to the city,” Perrone said. “So I went to the website and contacted them. They said, if we could get enough people together, they could bring the movie to our neighborhood.”

“Senior citizens are getting on in age from World War II,” Perrone added. “There’s not many left. Many are unaware of the memorial that was built in Washington D.C. If they're fortunate enough, and their health allows them to, they can take advantage of this honor flight.”

Perrone did not have to make any financial contributions to bring the film to Nassau County, but he did have to get the word out. He has already been in contact with the Bellmore VFW, and he plans to put up posters throughout the neighborhood to raise awareness for the film.

The movie is being shown on Feb. 28 at 7:30 p.m. The cost of tickets is $10 per person, and you can order the tickets by clicking here. Nobody will be charged until the minimum attendance number is met and additional times may be added if the response is overwhelming, Perrone said.

“This movie allows them to see what they wouldn’t be able to see if they couldn’t go to Washington,” Perrone said. “Their legacy is just going by the waste side without having people made aware of this opportunity.”
