Richard Perry Competes to Present at SXSW in Austin

The public has an opportunity to vote for the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District educator to present at the conference in March 2014.

Richard Perry, an English teacher at Calhoun High School for 16 years, will compete to present at the SXSW Conference in Austin, TX. in March 2014.

Perry was selected to present at the Texas Apple Distinguished Educator Institute in July. His presentation, “First Source Research and Narrative Presentation,” was well received and he was given the opportunity to compete to present an extended format of the topic at the SXSW Conference.

His presentation passed the first round of selection.

The public will have the opportunity to make the final decision in a second round of voting from Aug. 19 to Sept. 6 to decide the final slate of presenters.

Perry was one of the first high school teachers in the United States to launch a course on iTunes U. His current courses, including English 11R and 9R, have had more than 100,000 visitors and have been taken more than 20,000 times by students and teachers from around the nation.

Perry presented at the Long Island Technology Summit in October 2012 and in February he was chosen as an Apple Distinguished Educator.

Perry is currently designing a 10th grade course aligned with the New York State Common Core that will be published on iTunes U in September. He will also present at the Long Island Alternative Education Association's First Annual Conference on Alternative Education in October.
