Grand Avenue Students Donate Cell Phones to Soldiers

Students collected more than 1,000 cell phones for Senator Charles Fuschillo's "Cell Phones for Soldiers" program.

Senator Charles Fuschillo, R-Merrick, recently congratulated Grand Avenue Middle School students for collecting more than 1,300 cell phones for his "Cell Phones for Soldiers" program.

“What the students at Grand Avenue Middle School did is amazing," Fuschillo said. "The over 1,300 cell phones they collected will help connect soldiers serving overseas with their families back home."

The “Cell Phones for Soldiers” program collects old, unwanted or broken cell phones to benefit American troops serving overseas.

Each phone collected by the Grand Avenue students, along with the others collected through the program, will be sent to a cell phone recycling
company which will make a donation to the program for each donated phone.

The donations will be used to purchase calling cards for overseas soldiers to call their loved ones in the United States.

To date, the program has raised more than 160,000 minutes of calling time for soldiers and their families.

"Many, many people will have smiles on their faces because of what these children did," Fuschillo said. "They should be extremely proud of themselves."
