Residents Concerned About Columbus Avenue Drug Activity

North Bellmore residents recently shared concerns at the March North Bellmore Civic Association meeting regarding alleged drug transactions that have been spotted on Columbus Avenue.

Legis. David Denenberg, D-Merrick, said he’s been contacted before regarding Columbus, but police are following procedure to make their case.

“On a lot of drug trafficking at a home or a location, it takes time to see something happen for a police standpoint,” Denenberg said. “An ongoing investigation often takes some time to make a case that will stick.”

He added that, while catching those taking part in the transaction is a priority, those moving the “product” are also a target for police.

“You don’t want to just get the people at the end of a sale, but you want the traffickers as well,” Denenberg said. “On Columbus, I think it’s going to be something a lot bigger than we thought.”
