North Bellmore Library Hosts Teen Art Show

Twenty-eight works of art remain on display in the library's computer lab.

On Tuesday night, the North Bellmore Library hosted their first Teen Art Show to display the creative works of local students. Librarian Jessica Tymecki organized the event and selected pieces to showcase in the library's computer lab. "I'm thrilled about the turn out," said Ms. Tymecki, who also had the difficult job of looking at every single piece that was submitted. "I only had space for 25 pieces, but as you can see, I chose 28." Over 60 pieces were submitted into the art show. Most of the pieces chosen were completed by Mepham High School students. Christi Scoca, who had four pieces showcased, said her inspiration was "music." "It's something everybody can relate to," she added. Two other students said that their pieces were class …

Local Elementary School Students Teach Tolerance

Youngsters in the North Bellmore Elementary School District spread the word to fellow students about acceptance of others.

Student representatives from the six schools in the North Bellmore Elementary School District participated in a Middle Schools Anti-Bias Day program held at the Barry Technical Institute in Westbury in October. Since then, in recent weeks, the youngsters have acted as tolerance teachers to fellow students, spreading the word about what they learned during the four-hour session that day. "A group of students volunteered," said Lynne Smith, Prevention Program director, when asked how the children were chosen. "From those volunteers, a select group was randomly chosen because they were mature, responsible, and committed to bringing the message of tolerance back to the rest [of our students]." The program was offered free of charge through …

Demographic Study Shows Shrinking Student Numbers in North Bellmore

The upcoming bond vote and the budget situation also discussed at North Bellmore Board of Ed meeting.

At the March 11 board of education meeting, North Bellmore Superintendent of Schools Arnold Goldstein announced the results of a demographic study of the school district. The study estimates that the school district's student population will decrease 66 students, from 2,163 to 2,097.     "It's really important to know these trends so we can plan accordingly," Goldstein said.     According to the study, all schools should have decreasing populations over the next four years, with the exception of Dinkelmeyer Elementary School.     Seventy new homes are being built on what had been a military operations center in North Bellmore, and the report estimates that this will add 24 students to Saw Mill Road Elementary School. 100 Days of School and Counting for Reinhard Students

Children celebrate the 100th day of school with activities.

Mother Nature might have pushed back the celebration a few days, but that didn't prevent the students at Charles A. Reinhard Elementary School from having a wonderful time for the 100th Day of School. Celebrated on Feb. 23, the Reinhard students showcased their musical skills by singing songs centered on the number 100, and counted students by ones, fives and tens. Following the program, the students returned to their classrooms where they participated in mathematical counting games, arts and crafts projects and writing assignments.

Drawing a Proud Crowd at Bellmore Schools

Proud parents gather for Bellmore School District's children's art gallery.

The main entrance hallway at Winthrop Avenue School was transformed Monday night into an art gallery.  The artists were none other than close to 100 of the 1,100 kindergartners to sixth-grade students in the Bellmore Elementary District’s three schools. Many of these budding artists were present at the gallery opening, ready and willing to discuss their art and their approach to it.  “I like to draw a lot,” said fifth-grader Alexis Bonura, standing next to a portrait of a girl in a scarf she found in a magazine that she recreated in vibrant colors with acetate markers and foil.  “I wanted to be challenged, so I did the hardest one from all the things lined up in pots in the classroom,” said third-grader Ethan Grimes of the flowers in a …
