Questions arise over use of Newbridge Road property as a church.
The Walk in Love for Jesus Non-Denominational Church in Bellmore is causing quite a stir in the community. Nearby residents have been protesting the rezoning of the residential property as a church for several years, citing that it will decrease their property values. Jeanette Capriola, the pastor and founder of the Walk in Love for Jesus Church, was denied church status by the Hempstead Town Zoning Board in 2008, but the decision was overturned in an appellate court and was granted church status in August. Vincent Franco is one of the more vocal opponents to this church, as his property abuts the building. He organized a protest outside the church on Sunday, and said he is not pleased with what he believes the church is doing to his …

That 70s Band performs a Michael Jackson tribute in an outdoor concert.
On a Tuesday night at Newbridge Road Park That 70s Band performed a free outdoor concert featuring a tribute to Michael Jackson. There was a great turnout for this event, which also featured Hofstra's Astronomy Outreach Program. "It's nice to have a place for families and friends to go to that's inexpensive and fun," said Rachel Fuseo, an employee of the recreation office for the Town of Hempstead. That 70s Band had the crowd going right from the start. Everyone was on their feet dancing the night away to songs like "All Night Long" by Lionel Richie and Earth, Wind and Fire's "September." The second half of their performance was a Michael Jackson tribute that really energized the crowd. They kicked off the tribute with a fan favorite "…

Meeting takes place to educate residents about district proposed bond and March 24 vote.
North Bellmore Schools sponsored a Bond Fair last night at Newbridge Road School to inform North Bellmore residents about the impending bond vote that will take place on March 24. The bond money would help fix various safety issues concerning the district. Superintendent Arnold Goldstein and Assistant Superintendent Dr. Marilyn Johnson were in attendance, as well as the principals from each school in the North Bellmore district. Tables were set up with representation from each school and a financial advisor, who was there to answer any questions attendees had. There was also a PowerPoint presentation detailing the logistics of the bonds. A bond issue is a way to borrow money to fund capital projects. It allows districts to maximize the …

Students learn the mummification process and how it was used in ancient Egypt.
Newbridge Road sixth graders time traveled back to the days of pharaohs and pyramids last week. As part of a unit on Ancient Egypt, students learned the process of mummification and why and how the ancient Egyptians used it. For those who need a reminder, mummification was used to preserve pharaohs for their ascent into the afterlife. What's a pharaoh? "A powerful Egyptian ruler!" the students shouted. Students were asked to research a specific pharaoh and come in with a "trading card" of facts and stats on the chosen ruler. Students proceeded to share their findings, from King Tut to Cleopatra. Then, it was time for some real fun. Students paired up in front of a miniature sized skeleton and were given paper, glue and casting mix to wrap …

Presentations, tenure approval and a district update are the focus of the Jan. 14 North Bellmore Board of Education meeting.
Anytime you put a bunch of kids up on a stage, you're bound to get a room full of smiles and belly laughs. And that's just how the North Bellmore Board of Education opened their Jan. 14 meeting. Superintendent Arnold Goldstein thanked those involved in bringing student and teacher presentations to the board and community. After a colorful speech on passionate learning (see video 2), Gunther first grade teacher Debra Hannaberry showed a PowerPoint presentation asking students what it means to be a "passionate learner." One of the more comical answers was from first grader, Brandon who responded, "doing a bubble bath." Their passionate learning program involved utilizing different activities for each season to learn math. Then, Dinkelmeyer …
