Long Island Crisis Center, Bellmore and Merrick PAL units face spending problems amidst county budget cuts.
The Long Island Crisis Center in Bellmore is among several youth board agencies fighting proposed spending cuts made by Nassau County Legislature. "This fund is more than ample to pay the salaries of the Youth Board contract staff who have been laid off," wrote Associate Director Andy Peters in an email plea to supporters. "This decimation of the Youth Board staff could potentially mean a loss of millions of dollars in federal and state funding streams to youth service agencies like LICC, which have been successfully accessed for us in the past." The cuts are part of a $100 million reduction in the 2011 budget due to the control period issued by the Nassau Interim Finance Authority, the state oversight board in charge of the county’s …

Pride for Youth is honored to be the recipient of a generous donation from the production of "Rent" recently put on by The Showplace at Bellmore Theater. They graciously donated the sales of tickets to PFY, raising a total of almost $1,000. In addition to this - and to giving away discounted tickets to all PFY participants, as well as to the staff of both PFY and Long Island Crisis Center - the cast came to PFY's Coffeehouse in June and gave a stellar performance for all the participants and staff. Pride for Youth would like to thank Erinn Furey and the cast of "Rent" for their strong support.

This Thursday's performance to benefit Bellmore-based group.
If you want the chance to see a great off Broadway production and help out a worthy cause at the same time, then Thursday night's performance of "Rent" at the Bellmore Theater at 8 p.m. is where you need to be. All the proceeds will benefit Pride For Youth (PFY). "It is a goal of mine, as well as a concern, to create actual community theater, in which the large theater community on Long Island is able to engage with and assist the communities in which they perform," said Erinn Furey, a social worker and masters candidate at Columbia University who spearheaded the idea for the benefit performance. "I had researched non-for-profits in Bellmore and came across PFY. When looking at their website, I was amazed to see how the mission and …

For Norman Kay, life is about living to the fullest. It's not only about how you can make yourself better, but more importantly, it's about what you can do for others, and that has been Kay's mission during his 12-plus years as a hotline counselor and member of the board of directors at the Long Island Crisis Center (LICC) in Bellmore. "I wanted to do more on a broader basis," said Kay, who has had a very successful career as the CEO of IBC Shell Packaging, which he started in 1967. "I felt like I could help people even more." Now the Port Washington resident is taking it to the next level. Tomorrow, he will get on a bicycle and ride 145 miles from Penn Station to Montauk to benefit LICC. Let's Walk, Let's Talk: Stepping Together to Prevent Suicide slated for April 25.
On April 25, hundreds of people will gather at Morgan Park in Glen Cove to lend a helping hand in raising awareness about suicide prevention as participants in the Glen Cove Fitness Walk. Let's Walk, Let's Talk: Stepping Together to Prevent Suicide will benefit the Long Island Crisis Center in Bellmore, a Nassau County-funded organization that aims to provide, among other things, "free, high-quality, accessible and confidential services to Islanders in crisis," according to its Web site. The walk is a follow-up to one held in Long Beach last fall and officials at the center expect it to become a semi-annual one held at the two cities in the county. Action aims to draw attention to anti-LGBT name-calling, bullying and harassment in schools.
Today is a National Day of Silence, where hundreds of thousands of students nationwide take a vow of silence to bring attention to anti-lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender name-calling, bullying and harassment in their schools. "Day of Silence is significant in that it gives all people the opportunity to stop and recognize how, despite movement forward, many LGBT youth still suffer in silence, while those around them make remarks that disparage the very essence of who they are, further isolating them from people and the world around them," Pride for Youth Executive Director Pete Carney said. "It is with great hope that more people reach out and help young LGBT individuals to no longer have to suffer in silence." Based in Bellmore, Pride …

Bellmore-based organization serves gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth.
Pride for Youth, a service and an advocate for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth ages 13-20 based in Bellmore, has appointed a new director. In January, Pete Carney was promoted from his position as Pride for Youth's assistant director, and its former director, Andy Peters, was promoted to associate executive director of the Long Island Crisis Center, the parent organization of Pride for Youth. Last year, the organization reached out to 712 youths. Carney, who has been with the organization for two years, plans to continue its commitment to the lesbian, gay, bisexual youth on Long Island with special emphasis on the growing population of Long Island's transgender youth. ClearVision Optical recently held an exhibit highlighting the work of photographer Hannah Rae Hegnauer. All proceeds from sales of the works went directly to Pride for Youth in Bellmore. Since ClearVision moved to their new location in Hauppauge three years ago, they began their Museum Way art exhibits, wherein four times a year they sponsor the work of a spectacular artist and donate 100 percent of the proceeds to a non-profit charitable agency who serves the Long Island community. Artist Hannah Rae Hegnauer studied photography at The Art Institute of Seattle. Currently, Hannah works as a book designer for several prestigious firms in New York. Her photographs have been featured in Anne Waldman s book "Outrider" (La Alameda Press, 2006…

From begining in PAL they have wanted to expand that into more formal lessons in golf and play higher levels of track. PAL gives the communities children an opportunity to grow and be part of a good …   more ›
