Teachers and administrators welcome back students for another school year.
It was so long summer for thousands of Merrick students Tuesday morning as the youngsters headed back to the classroom to kick off a new school year. The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School district welcomed back students Tuesday, but the children will get to ease into those new textbooks and homework assignments. Schools will be closed Thursday and Friday for observance of the Jewish holiday Rosh Hashanah. "We have had a very smooth opening to the school year; the students and staff are excited to begin what promises to be wonderfully productive year at Kennedy," said Lorraine Poppe, Kennedy principal. "Although our classes began today, many of our students and staff have been back for a while, beginning sports season and preparing …

Students and faculty share their ways to help smooth the transition to a new school.
With school looming around the corner, back-to-school jitters are back in action. Transitioning between schools can be difficult, but the Bellmore and North Bellmore School Districts hosts orientations to help ease the stress, as well as offering various programs and counseling to children. Incoming seventh graders at Grand Avenue were given the opportunity to walk through the school, become familiar with opening lockers and meet the faculty this past month. They were also guided by eighth grade students who recalled just how nervous they were when starting. "After school started was when the nerves kicked in," said Kara Ognibene. "I just remembered that everybody was going through it." Eighth grader Sara Miller offered the following …

One man arrested after two females found passed out near school grounds, witnesses say; no Mepham students involved.
Nassau Police were called to Mepham High School earlier today after two women collapsed in the grass outside of the campus, according to eyewitnesses. According to accounts from two Mepham students, two 20-year-old women were allegedly stumbling while walking in front of the school on Stewart Avenue. They were then reportedly "passed out" in the grass. The students began "shaking" the girls to wake them up and told them to leave the area. The students said that Mepham Principal Michael Harrington responded to the scene and immediately notified police. Another man allegedly involved was arrested near school grounds, the students said. One of the students said she had seen the man in the area before. A representative from the school district…

The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District School Board met Wednesday night.
Calhoun and Mepham high schools will both welcome new assistant principals next year as Superintendent Henry Kiernan announced the appointments Wednesday night at the monthly meeting of the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District's School Board. Nicole Hollings, currently a biology teacher at Mepham, will head to Calhoun to takeover the post being vacated by the retiring Gerard Swier. Christopher Safina, a guidance counselor at Mepham, will become an assistant principal at that school. "We look forward and welcome Nicole," Kiernan said of Hollings. "We do expect wonderful things from her." Hollings, who attended Swarthmore College and then received a master's degree in science teaching from SUNY-Stony Brook, began her career at …

Event at Merrick's Treehouse Sports Café seeks to raise funds and reunite Mepham runners.
Tomorrow night the Troy DePass Scholarship Fund will hold its first annual Mepham Track Reunion and Fundraiser at the Treehouse Sports Café in Merrick. The event aims to raise money for the fund as well as reunite members of Wellington C. Mepham High School's track and cross country running teams. The Troy DePass Scholarship Fund was founded roughly 10 years ago by the family of Mepham student Troy DePass. DePass, a former member of Mepham's cross country team, passed away in 1996, just before his senior year, from a rare and aggressive form of leukemia. "We were all deeply crushed," said Lee Krinsky, DePass' friend and fellow Mepham runner. "It was sudden and shocking." Krinsky is one of the current overseers of the Troy DePass …

Community Wellness Council of the Bellmores & Merricks presents What's in Your Medicine Cabinet?
Have you heard about the latest drug trend? Young people attending "farm/pharm parties" - and we are not talking about the petting zoo kind. Also known as pharm parties (as in pharmaceuticals), they are just one of the newest things on the drug scene, one that has crept into the suburbs, some experts say. "The drug scene on Long Island has reached pandemic proportions," said Steven H. Chassman, LMSW, clinical director of the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence. Chassman came to the Brookside building on Wednesday evening for an event presented by the Community Wellness Council of the Bellmores and Merricks with the assistance of Legislator Dave Denenberg (who attended), Assemblyman Dave McDonough and local businessman …

Bellmore-Merrick heads to the playoffs this weekend against Cold Spring Harbor.
Last night, the 10-8-1 Bellmore-Merrick Bulldogs hockey team took the ice against Locust Valley-North Shore at Newbridge Ice Rink for their last game of the regular season. The Bulldogs, playing for poise and solidifying Coach Chris Pattan's strategy for the playoffs, got on top early and defeated Locust Valley-North Shore, 4-0. Following a tremendous rendition of the National Anthem by Mepham's very own Christina LaRocchia that would even have sent Simon Cowell to his knees, the Bulldogs got out to a quick lead. Showing quick hands for the Bulldogs was Mepham sophomore Allen West. "He plays like he's 6-feet tall, this is a breakout year for him," said Patten. Following a blocked wrist shot from the right side, West tucked away a juicy …
