Recently, the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) presented the 2011 Chairman’s award to Wendy Tepfer, director of the Community Parent Center, for her efforts in promoting teen driver safety in Nassau County.  The Community Parent Center’s "Driving in the Safe Lane" program is a multifaceted presentation that addresses these risks using a community partnership model that includes the education and health communities as well as government, law enforcement and industry. Bullying and Depression: The Signs a Parent Should Watch For

The Bellmore-Merrick CHSD and the Community Parent Center present a program for parents on bullying, cyber-bullying and youth depression.

Tears swelled up in the eyes of audience members last Thursday when guest speaker John Halligan told the story of how, after years of being bullied by classmates at school and online, his 13-year-old son Ryan committed suicide on Oct. 7, 2003. The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District and the Community Parent Center presented the evening program for parents, held in the Brookside School auditorium, and focused on bullying, cyber-bullying and youth depression. “We are empowering parents and community members with strategies to take preventative action to help [kids] deal with these difficult situations,” said Wendy Tepfer, director of the Community Parent Center. ”By working together, I am sure we can continue to build a community …

As a former teacher, I am amazed at how mean spirited kids can be toward each other. Certainly, bullying existed before social media, but it has become more pervasive and dangerous than it was in the pre-digital age. Parents and teachers, obviously need to be aware and involved in preventing bullying, but the kids themselves need to help and protect each other against bullies and bullying. …   more ›

The 100 Deadliest Days for Teen Drivers

Director of Community Parent Center discusses safe teen driving during the summer months.

Wendy Tepfer, director of the Community Parent Center, has written the following in regards to safe summer driving: Memorial Day to Labor Day – the best time of the year for teens as they trade text books for car keys, going to the beach or pool parties; unfortunately, it can also be the worst time of the year as it marks the 100 Deadliest Days on the road. The 100 days between Memorial Day and Labor Day are when the number of teen driving fatalities and injuries increases dramatically. According to a study by the FIA Foundation and the National Organization for Youth Safety, twice as many teens die on roads during the summer months as compared to other times of the year. As teens take to the roads, parents must take action and talk about …

VIDEO: Nassau County Kicks Off UN Road Safety Campaign

"Decade of Action for Road Safety” is beginning around the world for preventable accident awareness.

Nassau County kicked off the United Nation's "Decade of Action for Road Safety” campaign with a press conference and demonstration at Holy Trinity Diocesan High School on Wednesday. Acting Nassau County Police Commissioner, Tom Krumpter, along with Wendy Tepfer, director of the Bellmore-Merrick Community Parent Center and members of the Nassau County police department highway patrol and emergency services, were on hand to discuss and show the implications of drunk driving with teens from the high school. "Yearly, approximately 5,000 teens are killed in car crashes and another 300,000 are injured. Think about it. That equates to 14 teenagers dying every single day," Tepfer said. "We, in law enforcement, and in the community, are going to …

Alcohol Awareness Goes Hand in Hand With April

Director of Community Parent Center discusses alcohol awareness.

Wendy Tepfer, director of the Community Parent Center, has written the following in regards to Alcohol Awareness Month. It’s springtime, the season when high school students tend to celebrate: starting with receiving a driver’s license, spring break, the prom, graduation parties and culminating with a long summer vacation. It's also the time when teens can experience the consequences of drinking too much, at too early an age. As a result, underage drinking is a leading public health problem in this country. April is Alcohol Awareness Month. The Community Parent Center encourages parents to educate themselves and then talk to their teens about alcohol abuse, drug abuse, and other risky behaviors. Since 1987, the National Council on …

Community Parent Center Changes With the Times

Approaching its 25th anniversary, the organization meets new challenges.

How does an organization that has found a way to successfully meet the needs of the public continue to succeed? Some rest on their laurels, some fall behind the power curve, and some change with the times. For nearly a decade now, changing with the times has been the strategy for Wendy Tepfer, director of the Community Parent Center, a 501 C 3 not-for-profit group that originated in the Bellmore-Merrick school system more than two decades ago. The originating concept behind the center was to provide parents and families with education, resource information and the support they need to raise resilient children who are confident, non-violent and drug free. That concept remains the same, Tepfer noted. But doing that, she said, is a matter of …

Community Parent Center Issues Winter Driving Tips for Teens

Director of Community Parent Center issues winter safety tips for teen drivers.

Wendy Tepfer, Director of the Community Parent Center, has issued the following safety tips for teen drivers during the winter season: Frigid temperatures, snow, ice, sleet and rain: when the weather changes, so do the driving and road conditions. Winter weather driving is a challenge for any driver, even those with years of experience. For new teen drivers, it can be extremely scary and incredibly dangerous when the roads are covered with ice and snow. In a typical year, winter weather is directly or indirectly involved in 400,000 vehicular accidents in the United States, leading to 1,300 fatalities. The Community Parent Center urges parents of new teen drivers and those who are first learning to drive this winter winter to teach them …

I don't believe people should be taught to turn into the skid. Turning into the skid will guarantee a spin In a situation where the vehicle does skid, you should counter-steer the skid and chances are with proper throttle and braking the vehicle will catch itself and straighten out. The town should set up a winter driving course with professionals in an empty parking lot and teach people how to …   more ›

'Tis the Season for Safe Teen Driving

Director of Community Parent Center issues safety tips for teen drivers.

Wendy Tepfer, Director of the Community Parent Center, has issued the following safety tips for teen drivers this holiday season: With the holiday season upon us, the Community Parent Center believes it is important for parents to be extra careful when handing over the car keys to their teen drivers. The time between Thanksgiving Day and New Year's Day is one of the busiest for travel, and newly licensed teens do not have enough experience they need to navigate through the heavy traffic and winter weather conditions. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of injury and death among teenagers annually, and the crash fatalities are even higher during the Christmas and New Year holidays. Young drivers, ages 16 to 20, are especially …

North Bellmore Schools Hold Seminar on Cyber-Bullying and Internet Safety

Parents and Students attend an educational session on cyber-bullying and Internet safety at Saw Mill.

North Bellmore Public Schools, in conjunction with the Community-Parent Center, held a seminar on cyber-bullying and Internet safety at Saw Mill Road on Tuesday evening. Both parents and fifth graders were asked to attend the two-hour educational night. Sixth-grade students are invited to attend in the spring. Parents and children were divided into two rooms to view age-appropriate videos and discuss it with group leaders. Wendy Tepfer, Director of the Community Parent Center, began the night by discussing the idea that all websites are not created equal and that students "should utilize all the benefits of technology and not fall prey to pitfalls." For the past five years the Community Parent Center has been running this program and …

Family Day: A Day to Eat Dinner With Your Children

Community Parent Center supports Family Day celebration.

Monday will mark CASA's 10th Annual Family Day – A Day to Eat Dinner with Your Children. Family is the main source of hope, stability, and love for children and youth. Children thrive in loving families where they are taught, nurtured, and comforted. On Family Day, we celebrate the special bonds that link parents with their children, and we understand the importance of parental involvement in their children's lives. Family Day A Day to Eat Dinner with Your Children was created in 2001 by CASA (The National Center on Substance Abuse and Addiction at Columbia University), as a national effort to promote family dinners and parental engagement as a simple, effective way to reduce substance abuse among teens and raise healthier children. Make a…
