McCarthy: USDA Unveils School Lunch Reforms I Originally Championed

New child nutrition reforms for school meals unveiled this week.

The United States Department of Agriculture unveiled new child nutrition reforms for school meals this week that include many reforms pushed through Congress last year by Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, D-Mineola. “A healthy student is a successful student – kids can’t do well in school when they’re hungry and tired,” said McCarthy. “I’m so glad and proud that the USDA is going to be implementing many of the reforms that I championed in my committee recently; hopefully we can reduce childhood obesity and improve grades across the nation thanks to these reforms.” According to the USDA, the reforms include:  As chairwoman of the Healthy Families and Communities Subcommittee, McCarthy worked to implement child nutrition reform, including efforts to …

Yes, Jack. What happened to personal responsibility and accountability? It's a real shame what's happening. It's always someone else's fault. There's always someone holding you down. Now, on top of that, the grand old government knows all. We are so incompetent, we can't even feed ourselves, shelter ourselves, keep ourselves warm, gain medical care, or mobilize ourselves (and so many other things…   more ›

McCarthy Blasts House Leadership for Passing Concealed Handgun Bill

Says public safety and jobs should be top priorities.

Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, D-Mineola, a vocal advocate for reducing gun violence, blasted House leadership and many of her colleagues after the passage of H.R. 822, the National Right to Carry Reciprocity Act. The bill forces states to recognize the concealed handgun permits issued by other states even if their safety standards are much lower. Rep. McCarthy said that it’s the wrong bill to pass when it would hurt public safety and does nothing to help the country’s top priority, jobs and the economy. “This bill is a gross violation of both states’ rights and public safety, as well as a gratuitous gift to the powerful gun lobby when states already have the option to do what this bill mandates," she said. “With the White House getting shot at …

A more stringent, yet state controlled process for handgun carry permits need to be implemented . As I possess the types of arms that may be called biceps by mere underdeveloped men. I can state (through experience) that my arm cannons are admired by all women and doubly act as a deterrence to all who wish harm upon the sizzler.   more ›

McCarthy Urging Long Islanders to Send ‘Holiday Mail for Heroes’

The Red Cross is working with the Pitney Bowes mail technology company to collect and distribute holiday cards to American service members, veterans and their families.

While American soldiers serve in military deployments around the world and the nation gets ready to observe Veterans Day, Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, D-Mineola, wrote holiday cards to be sent to soldiers this holiday season and urged fellow Long Islanders to do the same. Starting now and throughout the holiday season, the Red Cross is working with the Pitney Bowes mail technology company to collect and distribute holiday cards to American service members, veterans and their families in the United States and around the world. McCarthy signed a number of the cards in Washington, D.C. Nov. 2 at a special holiday card signing event on Capitol Hill. She said it was easy for anyone to do the same from the comfort of their own homes or offices. “We …

I have heard just the opposite from my friends serving in the military. Mail is hard to get on a regular basis from home and then the holidays come. They want to see letters from their loved ones, not hundreds of generic thanks for your service cards from 3rd graders. I say let's make sure the care packages and letters from home reach them at the holidays.   more ›

McCarthy Calls for Toll-Free Hotline for Airplane Noise Complaints

Congresswoman wrote to federal and state authorities asking them to clearly delineate their jurisdictions.

Rep. Carolyn McCarthy wrote to federal and state authorities last week asking them to clearly delineate their jurisdictions and create a joint toll-free hotline that they would use to address airplane noise heard by residents of Nassau County. The steps, Rep. McCarthy argues, would help citizens cut through the red tape of two large agencies and find resolution to the problem of increasing airplane noise. In the Oct. 7 letter to FAA regional administrator Carmine Gallo and Port Authority director of aviation Susan Baer, Rep. McCarthy wrote: “I have heard from residents all over my district expressing their concern regarding the number of airplanes that fly over their homes, citing that the volume has increased in recent months. Residents …

Put all the people who call to complain on the no-fly list. You can't have it both ways. If you don't like the noise you are not allowed to fly.   more ›

McCarthy: Window Opens for Local Fire Departments to Apply for Grants

FEMA funding can help firefighters and first responders get needed resources to protect the public.

Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, D-Mineola, announces the opening of the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA’s) Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) Program application period for local fire departments. The FY 2011 application period opened Aug. 15. All applications must be submitted by Friday, Sept. 9 at 5 p.m. “During tough times like these when local funding is at record lows, these grants can help Long Island fire departments get the equipment and staffing they need to keep our communities safe,” McCarthy said.  “I encourage every fire department in my district to take advantage of this opportunity.” Last year, the villages of East Rockaway and Floral Park received more than $200,000 total for their fire departments to improve …

McCarthy Reflects on Social Security’s 76th Birthday

Congresswoman says she'll continue to protect the most vulnerable Americans from "misguided attacks on their well-being and their ability to contribute to the nation’s economy."

Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, D-Mineola, who is fighting to protect Social Security beneficiaries from cuts proposed by some members of the House Republican Majority, marked Social Security’s 76th anniversary by reaffirming her support for the program and its beneficiaries. She issued the following statement/op-ed: If you had a good friend who has dutifully been there for you and your family and your neighbors for her entire life, and she was having her 76th birthday, how would you celebrate? On Aug. 14, 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act into law, creating the safety net that’s helped millions of retired and disabled Americans stay out of poverty and contribute to the economy for several generations now. It’s a …

Progressive tax is wrong. Everyone should be paying something. Don't bother with the sales tax argument because that's a non-starter. You vote, you should be paying taxes or perhaps you should have to pay taxes to vote. Over 50% of the population pays no taxes - that is so wrong.   more ›

McCarthy: Honoring Our Heroes This Veterans Day

Congresswoman says she's advancing a legislative agenda that addresses the concerns of all veterans.

Each year on Veterans Day, Americans come together to remember those who have sacrificed their lives on behalf of our country in the name of freedom and democracy. The debt owed to them is immeasurable. Without the brave efforts of all the soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines and Coast Guardsmen and women, and their families, our country would not live so freely. On this Veterans Day, while we remember those who are with us from past conflicts, we continue to be engaged in hostilities in Iraq and Afghanistan. Let us honor the memory of the over 4,400 Americans who have died serving our country in these two conflicts. As you know, thousands of patriotic Americans on Long Island have answered their country's call in times of need and proudly …

McCarthy Defeats Becker in 4th Congressional District

Lynbrook resident comes up short against 14-year incumbent.

Longtime incumbent Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, D-Mineola, defeated Nassau County lawmaker and Lynbrook resident, Francis Becker in Tuesday's election for the 4th Congressional District seat. At 4 a.m., McCarthy led 89,828 votes to 77,483 votes. "Yesterday, the voters of the 4th Congressional District sent a clear message.  They said 'no' to the Party of No, to the distortion of facts and to the politics of division.  They said 'yes' to reason and to government taking aggressive measures to protect consumers, small businesses, taxpayers, and the working class," said McCarthy after her victory was announced. She added: "I'm proud to have helped thousands of constituents in my district office and millions of Americans with the legislation …

Activity Works Pilot at North Bellmore Schools May Become Model for National Program

Rep. Carolyn McCarthy visits Newbridge Road School to see children engaged in unique education-plus-exercise program.

Last spring, during a hearing on promoting healthy habits among children before the House Healthy Families and Communities Subcommittee she chairs, Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, D-New York, learned about a unique education-plus-exercise program called Activity Works being piloted in New York.   Yesterday, McCarthy visited Newbridge Road School to see the Activity Works program in action.  "My committee has been pushing for physical activity as part of overall childhood nutrition, anti-obesity policy-making," McCarthy said, adding that since First Lady Michele Obama has taken up the cause, it has received greater national attention. Nancy Copperman, director, Public Health Initiatives, Office of Community Health and Public Policy at North Shore-…
