Community Voice: Teachers Don't Just Teach Academics – They Teach Life Lessons

Michelle Lulic talks about how influential teachers are to the development of kids.

Everyday, students make their way to school for a day of learning. Here, they face teachers. Teachers are essential to any student’s educational experience and future. Whether it’s through the work sheets and notes they make up, or the after school extra help sessions, a teacher’s job is vital for a society and for the future of the generations to come. However, a teacher can be so much more than just someone who teaches lessons to a group of students. They can be guides, role models, or just someone to talk to. Teachers that form strong bonds with their students end up teaching them so much more about life and growing up than what’s originally intended. Students can find trust in a teacher. A teacher could be the person they can turn to …

Bellmore-Merrick CHSD Keeps Education Top Priority

Budget laid out at CHSD joint PTA meeting.

Sweets? Good. An increased district-wide budget? Not so good. The two were combined at Brookside School on Monday for an informational PTA meeting on the 2011-2012 budget for the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District.   As parents and school administrators munched on cookies, fruit and coffee, Deputy Superintendent Cynthia Strait-Regal gave a presentation on the $4.2 million total budget increase via Smart Board. “We had a really nice bump off back in 2007-2008, but … we are anticipating just about $16 and a quarter million,” Strait-Regal said. “Last time we got that amount was in 2006-2007, but that was when our budget was $24 million less than it is now.” Down 12.35 percent in coverage by state aid this year, unfortunate cuts had…

It all starts in Albany when you have politicians like Dave (McDonothing) McDoungh and Senator (Fluff) Fuschillo who do nothing but suck off the Taxpayer Of NY, because they are all about how much money they can get from the unions. They will never fight for the taxpayer there all in bed with each other. THROW THE BUMS OUT   more ›

You ain't seen nothin yet. Wait until next year. A state measure that would allow school districts to defer $1 billion in pension payments over the next two years is gathering momentum in Albany. Just wait until the bill come due for all the billions in unfunded pension and lifetime health benefits. Your property taxes are going through the roof in the next couple of years. Right now the teacher …   more ›

In a budget season that is looking to be tight, parents and students turned out to the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District Board of Education meeting Wednesday to ask the board to use discretion when making cuts. On the eve of the hockey state championships, a multitude of Bellmore-Merrick Bulldogs hockey parents came to tell the board how much the children enjoy the team and when making cuts, please consider keeping the team a school-sanctioned sport. “Please keep hockey as a school-recognized sport,” one mother said while addressing the board. “Let the junior varsity boys have the dream of qualifying for a school sport." Mitchell Barber, father of player Jake Barber, spoke out about how much good the Bulldogs have done for the …

When Obama decided to restructure GM, that is create a New GM, move everything of value to it, and dump the Old GM with all its debt, obligations, liabilities, etc., he did not call for a stockholders meeting. He just acted without the agreement of stockholders and bondholders. The school system on Long Island is so broken that it cannot be fixed, especially by a BOE that is part of the problem. …   more ›
