Police said that the couple had marital problems.
Update: May 2, 2012 at 1:23 p.m. Four children returned to their North Bellmore home after school Tuesday afternoon to find their mother dead on the floor of the laundry room and their father locked in an upstairs bedroom. Thomas Hayes, 43, stabbed his wife, Sherrelle Hayes, 44, and then hung himself, police said. According to Homicide Det. Sgt. Greg Lesmeister, the couple's 13-year-old daughter was the first to arrive home and her father only spoke to her from behind the door. Lesmeister said Hayes instructed her to pick up her other siblings - ages 10, 9 and 7 - from school. When she and three other siblings returned to the Smith Avenue home, they could not get in the front door. The children gained entry through another door and found …

Bellmore resident “Bald” Vinny Milano had a special guest during Sunday’s Yankees game.
"Bald" Vinny Milano, a Bellmore resident and chief "Bleacher Creature" for the New York Yankees, got a visit from Yankees' General Manager Brian Cashman during Sunday's game against the Detroit Tigers. According to ESPN New York, Milano spotted Cashman outside the stadium and asked the GM to come sit in the bleachers, as he has done in the past. "He said, 'Why don't you come on out?'" Cashman told ESPNNewYork.com after the Yankees' 6-2 win over the Detroit Tigers. "I said, 'You know what, maybe I will.' I've got my son. I've never experienced the roll call from the stands. I wanted my son to experience a big part of Yankee tradition now. "So I said, 'I'll come out for the first inning, if I have time. If something doesn't come up.' So we …

Media personalities return to their alma mater to talk about their careers and the media industry.
ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter only had to leave the stage once to answer a phone call during a homecoming presentation at Kennedy High School on Thursday night. Just before he sat down with co-worker and fellow Kennedy alumnus Steve Levy, he warned of a big story he’s working on for the worldwide leader in sports. The call turned out to be nothing, as were the many text messages and emails that came across his cell phone during the 90-minute session, but it was a clear picture into the life of one of the nation’s top NFL reporters, who got his start on Long Island as a sports fan and athlete for the Cougars. Welcomed with a video of their career highlights and signs in front of the school, both ESPN media personalities spoke about their …

The tournament continued to grow in its third year.
Bright and early Sunday morning, Kennedy High School hosted a fundraising event started by two young ladies hoping to make a difference in the fight against a deadly disease. Buckets for Breast Cancer is a double-elimination three-on-three basketball tournament that kicked off its third year. Hundreds of local residents, both adults and children, participated to help stomp breast cancer into the ground, once and for all. Allie Keller, co-creator of Buckets for Breast Cancer, graduated Kennedy last year and is now enrolled at Skidmore College in upstate New York. "I started this with my best friend, Taylor Kruter. Unfortunately, both of our families have been affected by breast cancer," she said. "We both played basketball here at Kennedy …

The 27-year-old defenseman had two goals and 15 assists in 53 games for the Lightning this season. "It feels good," Gilroy told TSN after the trade. "It's a little crazy right now. ... So horrible to read this. Praying for the kids. We never know what goes on behind closed doors and what he should have done or she shouldn't have done is irrelevant. This obviously was not something planned and I hope these kids have good family or relatives to take care of them and help them through this. God bless these kids and all the pain and suffering they will go through.   more ›
