I've got a LAX player too... not yet on the HS field, but plays on 2 teams with all home games atRead More one of the B/M high schools. It's embarrassing that our fields are so worn and shabby!! You hear Bellmore/Merrick and you'd assume the school fields would be great! Certainly an issue for people looking at the school district before deciding to buy around here... even if their kids do NOT play sports. The homes and property of our home owners are beautiful, but then, when you see the schools, it is quite a shock! I know that B/M is not a town with a lot of industry income, but I look at Levittown and Wantagh Schools... towns with little income from businesses...and very average incomes... and even THEIR fields sport beautiful turf and NIGHT LIGHTING! It's a GREAT time for the students, teams and marching band members...playing under the lights at night on a beautiful turf field at Division Ave. HS. Maybe we should check out how they managed to make that happen??

For years its all the same. I graduated Calhoun in 1980 and my sisters and cousins 83 & 85 asRead More well my sister's kids from Mepham (my nephew graduated last June). All the same then and the same now. Point is we have incompetents running the district. The times that I past Wantagh HS (Jerusalem Ave). The field was under construction and now lit up at night. Looks beautiful. Not one HS field has been done in our district.

Our CHSD also hired a NEW SUPERITENDENT... has anybody though of asking at what pay level??? Was it over 200K like Kiernan, we could have used money saved from that to do the fields, but we also have a a deputy Supt? Just what exactly does she do?!!!!! Give me break?! We dont have any industry?, what about ALL the stores in Bellmore and Merrick are their taxes cheap, I dont think so.... Boards of Education are hitting themselves and we are just watching!

Greg Bashaw May 24, 2013 at 10:42 am I am ALL for safety and speaking to our children about how toRead More handle a situation when a stranger approaches, BUT all these sketchy stories that have been consistently rushed to report is NOT doing any service to the public at large, except for scaring those who hear about them, and in fact allowing our community to falsely believe that it is being targeted by pedophiles....This man COULD have been asking for directions, and yet I think this is just another report that was rushed to be put out on this and other media BEFORE the facts were learned........ Mass Hysteria in these times will do nothing but alarm people and cause to people to be even more withdrawn from general society then they are already...... I would like to know more about the serious incidents that put our children's safety in danger that occur within the schools that go UNREPORTED by design so as not to tarnish the administration's and/ or the school district's legacy. Have you ever noticed nothing negative is EVER reported.

Now why aren't parents enforcing the "group rule"? Please tell your children to walk withRead More 2 or more friends. Also make sure they are not alone at home, the more the merrier.

Dear Board of Education; You are only doing an analysis to our fields NOW that a Superintendent isRead More starting on July 1st? And you admit these concerns have been coming up at many of your prior meetings! You should be ashamed of yourselves. This like telling a student to study the night before the SAT's and letting them skip 9th, 10th and 11th grade. You have not educated yourselves on the topic of safe fields, cared enough to tour the fields, or have kept our schools as competitive as our neighbors. Your letter is embarrassing! GIVE US ANSWERS at the next meeting! We can only hope that the new Superintendent has vision for our future student-athletes and that Board members who have vision for the future will come forward and speak out and make changes.

Board of Ed: Imagine if we as homeowners maintained our properties in the manner in which youRead More maintain our school district properties, it would bring down the property values in our entire community. I've been asking myself, why then do we accept this from our school district? We are charged an exorbitant amount of school taxes by you, yet we continue to accept mediocrity from you on so many levels. The kids and the community must come first, we've paid long enough. It's time to give back to the taxpayer and I DON'T mean in the way of an appropriated fund balance. Give back the funds you've already collected from us by upgrading the fields, it needs to be done, it's time!

Who in god's name would go to a supermarket when we have Peapod?? Supermarket's are out in theRead More dangerous real world, it's so much easier to just have someone deliver my groceries to my nice cozy south merrick home, and have my live-in maid put them away for me

Our children are taught about stranger danger. The child did the right thing. Not all contactsRead More will involve kidnapping, but molestation is a lot more common. And years ago when I was growing up, no one warned us. If you have to be so politically correct so as not to give a description of someone, then our children & society will be in real danger.
Helene June 3, 2013 at 09:38 am
It is not about being politically correct or not, it's about parenting. I still see children walkingRead More all by themselves to school early morning and afternoon. Why can't we teach our children to walk with someone? and then, we go ahead and complain about them being approached. HAVE YOUR CHILD WALK WITH A FRIEND, PERIOD. Additionally teach your children (teen) to look both sides before crossing, mostly if they are going to text and cross!

ANOTHER LOCKDOWN because of dogs?! Isnt this a little EXTREME?! We are becoming hostages of ourRead More fears! Why do we not lockdown the schools and report the SERIOUS problems that go on IN the schools..
Helene May 16, 2013 at 02:21 pm
and here again, they thought they were pit bulls so right away everyone is shaking with fears. MyRead More Cavalier King Charles will maul you before those pit bulls get to you, lol

Its is the string of REPORTED incidents that have left the people shaken. Read the string ofRead More incidents above. Most of them dont match for description, type person etc. Its is VERY possible that the people in these ve3hicles etc, were about to either ask for directions or were slowing down and because of kids in the street or area and just looked at the kids..... (we dont know because they never said ANYTHING) These incidents are very misleading and the consistent reporting makes the parents and children who hear about them VERY nervous. There are legitimate incidents that go on IN the schools that never get reported, ever. But these incidents no matter how mundane get reported thrice over by North Bellmore, Merrick and CHSD. Safety cannot be stressed enough but turning us ALL into deer in the headlights anxious becasue of these stories is not good for the health of the community. Tell us about the bullying incidents and the incidents about when teachers mistreat the students instead so parents like myself can be aware of the REAL problems our kids are facing.
Helene April 30, 2013 at 09:27 am
Could not have say it better. I always slow down when I see kids, and sometimes, will stare at a kidRead More crossing the street while texting! If my kid was doing so, I would hope someone, even a stranger will remind him of the danger of walking and texting.

Team Dawg April 26, 2013 at 07:59 pm
As stated in the story, please take time, often, to remind your children of what they should do inRead More incidents such as this. It seems like this has become a daily occurrence in districts all over Long Island. Keeping our kids safe is priority one!

A friend's daughter a month ago experienced the same interaction in Bellmore. Who ever this personRead More is, is targeting children in this age group and is familiar with the area. Please be careful.

Time to install video cameras everywhere?
Ralph Maffetone April 29, 2013 at 08:35 am
A male???? Really? That narrows it down to a couple of billion people. Don't you think you shouldRead More give a real description.
Greg Bashaw April 17, 2013 at 12:18 pm
Safe practices SHOULD be enforced....... but hysterically drawing the wrong conclusions (with theRead More evidence above) is also a problem to our community.
Team Dawg April 21, 2013 at 06:41 pm
This scenario is what prompted team Dawg to publish one of it's children's books on what to do inRead More such a circumstance. We have distributed our book in many districts as this seems to happen far too often, this year more than ever. Thankfully the children acted appropriately but it does serve as a reminder that it is never a bad idea to remind our children on how to act to keep themselves safe.

In this day and age of liberal protection for criminals, why would ANY parent allow their kid OF ANYRead More AGE to walk alone anywhere/anytime? Maybe the ACLU can assign a chaperone to each of the sex offenders they say deserve to rejoin & assimilate back into society.
