When a not for profit has a top dog making 600,000+ there is something wrong. How is that…Read More justified? It is hard to support a cause that less than 10% goes to help people. it is broke. Just like Washington. Or should i say broken? Or both?

Years ago, when we lived up the island, the Red Cross was at the scene immediately of a big…Read More apartment building fire in our complex, to help people who escaped the blaze in the middle of the night in freezing cold February. People were shuttled into other building lobbies, and the Red Cross, along with EMT staff, helped with blankets, food, medical care, and relocating for the night as well as providing information on What Next. So I think they do a great job to help in a crisis.

I am a BIG advocate for re-testing. Seeing as how anyone's health can change at any given moment, it…Read More should not just be limited to the elderly, IMO. Everyone should be required to be re-tested at least every 2-3 years. Plus, if someone is aware that their health has changed in any way (ie: eyesight, physical change, etc.), then it should be REQUIRED that they notify the DMV immediately or face some kind of penalty. It is not just the lives of the innocent that we are trying to protect, it is the lives of the drivers as well. Drivers need to stop being selfish and see the bigger picture here as to how it can snowball and effect everyone (especially innocent young children). I am also a believer that it is not just the younger drivers that should be in the "at risk" group.
The other problem is that when people go for their road test, they drive a regular sedan and then go out and purchase a larger vehicle. It is NOT the same, not for parking, not for driving, not at all. There should be a separate drivers license (different class) for those who drive SUVs , minivans and trucks. Plus, if someone is going to be driving one of those vehicles, then the road test should be required to be tested in one, NOT a regular sedan. I truly believe that this would help reduce accidents and force people to be better drivers by realizing their true limitations. Safety should never be compromised.

Seeing how people drive, age doesn't matter. In my opinion I think we should all be tested every 5…Read More years no matter what age category we are in.

I can certainly see both sides of this issue. As someone who works with the aging population…Read More (seniors 60+) I have no problem with NYS issuing driving tests to individuals over a specific age. Health concerns such as diabetes, macular degeneration and glaucoma affect a large handful of individuals where age may not be the issue - younger adults can also develop health issues that affect their driving capabilities.
It is not just about vision either. It is also about muscle control, being able to find your 'blind spot', being able to look from right to left without pain and knowing when to speed up and when to slow down.
Emotionally, losing the right to drive can make someone feel as if their independence is being taken from them. It can turn into an emotional loss that can take a great toll on someone if not handled properly.
While New York State, and all states, can put in place a general policy to require vision exams or even physicals at a certain age to allow drivers to keep on driving, individuals MUST take responsibilities and learn to acknowledge their physical limitations. We all need to remember that it's not just the driver that can be harmed in an automobile accident, it's the innocent people that never see it coming that can be hurt or killed as well.
