Long Island in Grip of Bitter Cold Snap

Editor's Note: This article was written and submitted by Joe Dowd.

A bitter cold spell has gripped the northeast and won't spare Long Island, where temperatures are not expected to rise above the 20s on Thursday.

The National Weather Service reported overnight temperatures in the single digits (about 10 degrees at Bellmore and Merrick at 5 a.m.) and is predicting possible snowfall into the evening on Friday.

The Town of Hempstead has opened 15 warming centers throughout its jurisdiction, the closest ones of which are located at the Bellmore Senior Center (2000 Bellmore Ave., Bellmore) and the Merrick Golf Course Clubhouse (2550 Clubhouse Rd., Merrick)

Experts recommend dressing in layers, wearing gloves and hats and avoiding extended periods outdoors. The sick and elderly are particularly vulnerable.

Severe cold weather is predicted through the rest of the week, with the possibility of some snow on Friday night, the NWS said.

Dressing in layers always worked for me with wearing the hat, scarf and gloves.
So why is it that I see people all the time (and it could at any place) complaining about the cold outside and are not properly dressed for the weather? Jumping up and down with thier hands in their pockets like some kind of entertainment. Yes baby it's cold outside. But just some common sense folks. Just plain old common sense. But snow this afternoon? I'll be waiting. Some overtime for me.

Natalie. I am so sorry to read this. I too have a little 5 yr. old dog who I love desperately...Read More and I feel your pain. There is another website for an organization that does an amazing job finding lost pets. It's LOSTMYDOGGIE.COM There is a small fee, but they get signs up all over the area and have a phone system set up where everyone in the area of where she was lost gets a PHONE CALL ALERT message to watch for Molly. They leave a phone number and their website address so if anyone has seen her or has her they know where to call. Great system! Check it out! I've never used them, but I HAVE received calls myself recently on 2 separate lost dogs and I've seen the many photos they hung up in my area in Levittown for dogs lost within a few miles of this area. In other words, they DO what they say they will do to help find Molly. Just want you to know what is out there to help you bring Molly home. My grandkids go to school around Grand and Camp Ave. We'll be watching for her! God Bless and good luck! I'm sure she will be returned to you real soon!!
