A bitter cold spell has gripped the northeast and won't spare Long Island, where temperatures are not expected to rise above the 20s on Thursday.
The
National Weather Service reported overnight temperatures in the single digits (about 10 degrees at Bellmore and Merrick at 5 a.m.) and is predicting possible snowfall into the evening on Friday.
The Town of Hempstead
has opened 15 warming centers throughout its jurisdiction, the closest ones of which are located at the Bellmore Senior Center (2000 Bellmore Ave., Bellmore) and the Merrick Golf Course Clubhouse (2550 Clubhouse Rd., Merrick)
Experts recommend dressing in layers, wearing gloves and hats and avoiding extended periods outdoors. The sick and elderly are particularly vulnerable.
Severe cold weather is predicted through the rest of the week, with the possibility of some snow on Friday night, the NWS said.

So why is it that I see people all the time (and it could at any place) complaining about the cold outside and are not properly dressed for the weather? Jumping up and down with thier hands in their pockets like some kind of entertainment. Yes baby it's cold outside. But just some common sense folks. Just plain old common sense. But snow this afternoon? I'll be waiting. Some overtime for me.
