Flooding Expected as Another Storm Approaches

Long Island is expected to be hit with another strong storm this Thursday and Friday.

Story by Scott P. Moore

Don't let the blue sky and sunny day fool you – Long Island is in for another weather whammy as yet another storm - the third in the last week, takes aim at the drenched area.

The National Weather Service is forecasting a strong low-pressure storm to push over Long Island starting on Thursday and leaving the area by early Friday. The system is currently affecting the midwest today as it slams across the nation.

The forecast calls for heavy rain to start during the middle of the day Thursday and pick up throughout the evening. The rain will begin to taper off after daybreak on Friday, leaving behind some lingering showers.

The storm is expected to drop another 3.5" to 4.5" of rain on an already saturated Long Island with some amounts locally higher than others.

The drenched ground will create an increased situation for small stream and urban flooding, and many roadways could be covered again as previous rainfall has not been completely drained yet.

The rain will only be one side of the storm – gusty winds could create further problems for trees, tree limbs and power lines. The National Weather Service is forecasting sustained winds of around 25 mph during the evening Thursday and Friday, with gusts possibly as high as 37 mph.

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for the entire tri-state area. A Flood Watch means a flooding event could occur in the area within the next 36 hours.
