Blizzard Means Boon for Bellmore Businesses

Pre-Sandy, beer flew off the shelves at Bellmore Fresh Farmers' Market in Bellmore. Come blizzard time, however, folks seem to be stocking up on the basics - bread and milk.

And while there were only hamburger and hot dog rolls to be found on the bread shelves Thursday night, the store manager Joanna said they are expecting deliveries of both fresh and company breads early Friday.

"In this store, deli and chop meat are big too," she added. Though the line at the deli counter was not long around 7 p.m.

The store plans on being open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday.

At Bedford Wine & Liquor, owner John said business was "like a Friday or Saturday night." Customers were filing in throughout the day to stock up.

Checkout lines at Stop & Shop were backed up into the aisles. Bread and meat were slim pickings, but workers were feverishly restocking the shelves. There was plenty of produce and regular milk, however the organic milk products were sold out.

It was a flashback to post-Sandy as long gas lines were seen throughout town. Valero at Bellmore Avenue and Newbridge Road, Valero at Centre Avenue and Sunrise Hwy, Mobil at Bellmore Avenue and Merrick Road, Gulf at Bellmore Avenue and Merrick Road and Hess on Jerusalem Avenue and Newbridge Road - all had several vehicles waiting for fuel.

Barbara Tepper said she went to the Valero on Bellmore Avenue and Newbridge Road Thursday afternoon.

"Only five or six cars there," she wrote on the Bellmore Patch Facebook page.
