Mepham to Host "Chop Locks for Charity" Event

Wellington C. Mepham High School’s Class of 2013 will be hosting the third “Chop Your Locks for Charity” event at Mepham High School on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

For their spring service learning project, Mepham’s senior class has joined forces with the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. St. Baldrick’s is the world’s largest volunteer-driven fundraising event for childhood cancer research.

“Chop Your Locks for Charity is an opportunity for our entire community to collaborate towards a common cause,” Principal Michael Harrington said. “So many members of the community have been affected by this devastating disease and this is the time to do something about it.”

In 2008 and 2009, Mepham hosted two very successful St. Baldrick’s events. The class of 2013 is looking to continue that tradition. The Mepham faculty, students, and community members will be able to shave their heads for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation or donate eight or more inches of their hair for the Pantene Pro-V Beautiful Lengths Campaign to show their solidarity for children who have been diagnosed with cancer.

Worldwide, 175,000 children are diagnosed with cancer each year, yet research to find a cure is significantly underfunded. St. Baldrick’s events are designed to fund lifesaving research to find a cure for childhood cancer. Thousands of volunteers shave their heads in solidarity for children with cancer and request donations of support from friends and family. At a St. Baldrick’s event, volunteers and donors recognize the importance of giving, and experience camaraderie in a cause greater than themselves.
