Mepham Kids to Shave Heads for Children's Cancer

The Mepham High School students, staff and community will gather on March 20 to raise money and awareness for the fight against children’s cancer.

Kerry Dennis and Christopher Patten, teachers at Mepham, have organized an event with the St. Baldrick’s Foundation in which people can get their heads shaved for charity.

Thus far, more than 100 volunteers have signed up just from Mepham’s senior class alone. This includes head shavers, head shavees and people volunteering at the event. Patten said that from Feb. 21-23, the seniors will hold registration so the rest of the student body has a chance to participate.

“We were inspired by the teachers that first brought this to Mepham a few years ago,” Patten said. “We want the kids to enjoy this amazing experience.”

Thus far, Mepham has raised $792 (as of Tuesday), according to St. Baldrick’s website.

“Join this St. Baldrick's event, and whether you decide to shave your head, volunteer, or donate, we hope you'll be a part of the excitement,” the website reads.

Mepham changed its curriculum four years ago so the seniors could take part in service learning, and this tradition has only grown. Patten added that the kids have worked with the Ronald McDonald House, Make A Wish Foundation, Austism Speaks and more, and they have raised more than $30,000 during their efforts.

“We’re hoping this really puts us over the top,” Patten said. “We hope this is a big event that raises money and awareness towards a great cause.”
