Rusty Lady Cougars Clawed by Bruins, 13-2

The Bellmore JFK Cougars traveled west to take on the Baldwin Bruins yesterday and despite a strong effort, the Lady Cougars were defeated, 13-2.

The Cougars saw the defensive end for most of the first half, giving up 12 goals before the midway point. 

The Cougars started their first game of this young season with an extremely young roster and injuries.

"We have a very young team," coach Keri Andre said.  "We lost 11 seniors to graduation last year."

By the half, the Lady Cougars were trailing 12-1, with their lone goal scored by junior Nicole Insardi.

"We knew coming in Baldwin was a good team," Andre said.

During the half, Andre gathered her team and talked about corrections that needed to be made to get the Lady Cougars back in the game.

"They scored 12 in the first, so why can't we score 12 in the second," she said.

The pep talk seemed to get her team on track as the Cougars played even throughout the rest of the game, 1-1 in the second half.  Junior Sam Rothery scored for the Lady Cougars.

Baldwin coach Nicole Lein was happy with her team's performance, but knows that it's early on in the season and that there is plenty of room to improve.

"I'm so happy with the offense because they did what they had to do," Lein said. "Defensively I really can't ask for much more."

The Lady Cougars will try to shake off some of this early season rust in their next game at home Saturday against Carey High School at 10 a.m.
