North Bellmore native Matt Gilroy was traded by the Tampa Bay Lightning to the Ottawa Senators Monday afternoon as the NHL's trade deadline approached.
The 27-year-old defenseman had two goals and 15 assists in 53 games for the Lightning this season.
"It feels good," Gilroy told TSN after the trade. "It's a little crazy right now. ... I'm excited to get up there and meet the guys tomorrow."
Gilroy played his high school hockey at St. Mary's in Manhasset. He graduated from Boston University in 2009 after playing four seasons as a defenseman for the Terriers. Gilroy was a three-time All American and won the Hobey Baker Award in 2009 as the best collegiate player in the nation.
The 6-foot-1 Gilroy was signed to a two-year, $3.5 million contract by the New York Rangers on April 17, 2009. He has 43 points in 180 career NHL games.
