For 39 years, the Bellmore-based Long Island Crisis Center (LICC) has been the lead agency for suicide prevention in Nassau County. The center provides free, confidential help with specially trained counselors answering the crisis intervention hotline 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It is also the first agency to offer one-on-one online counseling through its website, www.longislandcrisiscenter.org.

A recent government study found that more than 8 million Americans seriously consider suicide each year and about 32,000 suicides occur in this country annually. According to the American Association of Suicidology (AAS), a person commits suicide every 15 minutes in the United States; that's more than 90 suicides each day. Suicide is the third leading cause of death in this country for young people between the ages of 15 and 24.
