This week's Whiz Kid is Long Island Lutheran student Andrew Abend!
- Name: Andrew Abend
- Age: 17
- School: Long Island Lutheran High School (6-12)/Progressive School of Long Island (K-5)
- Accomplishment: Recipient of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Rensselaer Medal Award for outstanding academic achievement in the study of mathematics and science. Abend was also given the Rochester Institute of Technology Innovation and Creativity Award.
- Key to Awesomeness: Abend participated in Columbia University's Summer High School Program, designed for exceptional high school students, where he studied Theoretical and Experimental Physics. His professor at Columbia described him as a "smart, intellectually curious student with a healthy, inspired attitude."
- Abend is an AP Scholar and also a member of HART (Helping and Reaching Teens), Mathletes, WordMasters, Habitat for Humanity at Long Island Lutheran High School. He has traveled to England, Ireland and Italy with LuHi and will continue this year to Germany, Austria and Switzerland. He has also participated in the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth Program.
- Abend wishes to pursue a career in the field of engineering. His life-long curiosity for "how things work" coupled with his academic drive and dedication will certainly make this dream a reality.
