North Bellmore Schools Cancels February Break

Due to the school time lost during Hurricane Sandy, North Bellmore Schools have decided to cancel February break, according to Superintendent Arnold Goldstein.

Initially, after school was done on Feb. 15, students would have been free from the classroom until Feb. 25, but the storm changed those plans. Now, after a three-day weekend, students will be back in action on Feb. 19.

What do you think about the district's decision? Tell us in the comments below.

Better to lose the whole vacation & get it over with, rather than a few days here& there. Sorry to those that lost their traditional family vacation, but education is important. If we lost only a few days of the break, people would still take their vacation & kids would miss valuable time. Now that it has been decided, let's get back to focusing on our lives.

Considering what so many people have lost due to the storm...4 days is nothing. We (NY) are one of the very few states that have the entire week off in February. I don't think this break is necessary anyway, I'd rather have the kids finish school a few days earlier in June.

Would it be a big deal if the school year was extended for the the four days in June. Now what will happen if we have a bad winter and school are closed again? Are they going to take the spring recess? They have only two snows days?

Yeah, it would....Most of the teachers have 2nd jobs and many of the kids go to camps...I think this was the right decision...But it should have been made a lot sooner (as it was in other districts)...Once again, we lag behind the others...Can we ever be the frontrunner????

exactly!!!

Most of the kids in this area go to camps because BOTH their parents work...Shouldn't there also be a 'beef' with the teachers who vociferously voiced their opinion & put their foot down when the discussion broched the subject of extending the school year - all because of their 2nd jobs???...Their exorbitant salaries (for the amount of days they work & the lagging test scores they've produced) is a 'yearly' salary...Aren't they then double-dipping???...

Some how days have to be made up either by vacation or extending the school year. But now what will happens if we get a bad winter this year. Last winter we were lucky (remember two years ago). Are we now going to loose the Spring Recess also? There is only two snow days. February really means nothing to me except some rest for the kids (not us). But Easter (and for others Passover) we plan to be with the family. And to add: I don't get the whole summer off.

Natalie. I am so sorry to read this. I too have a little 5 yr. old dog who I love desperately...Read More and I feel your pain. There is another website for an organization that does an amazing job finding lost pets. It's LOSTMYDOGGIE.COM There is a small fee, but they get signs up all over the area and have a phone system set up where everyone in the area of where she was lost gets a PHONE CALL ALERT message to watch for Molly. They leave a phone number and their website address so if anyone has seen her or has her they know where to call. Great system! Check it out! I've never used them, but I HAVE received calls myself recently on 2 separate lost dogs and I've seen the many photos they hung up in my area in Levittown for dogs lost within a few miles of this area. In other words, they DO what they say they will do to help find Molly. Just want you to know what is out there to help you bring Molly home. My grandkids go to school around Grand and Camp Ave. We'll be watching for her! God Bless and good luck! I'm sure she will be returned to you real soon!!
