Hundreds Attend Bellmore-Merrick Transition Fair

More than 200 people attended Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District SEPTA and the Community Parent Center's Seventh Annual Fair for Transitioning Students with Disabilities this week. 

The event, which took place at Calhoun High School, offered a variety of information to assist with the transitioning process, including supported living options for people with special needs and eligibility determination.

“The Bellmore-Merrick SEPTA helps people with this transition fair by enabling them to explore services that are available to families once the students leave high school,” SEPTA Co-president Ellen Proszak said. 

More than 40 agencies, including Ken’s Krew, Life’s WORC and the Vocational Training and Employment Center at Sid Jacobson JCC provided information to students and families. 

Attendees were also able to select workshops to attend from a diverse list, which included Medicaid Service Coordination, Waivers, Recreation and Crisis Services, Supplemental Security Income and Medicaid.

"The transition fair attempts to make the massive amount of information required to consume, available and at their fingers," Cheryl Gitlitz, the districtwide transition coordinator said. "Our goal is to assist families of special needs students gain the resources they need to be successful and production members of their communities.”
