Grand Avenue PTSA Holds Last Meeting of Year
The meeting discussed upcoming events and honored retiring Principal Lewis Serra.
At their last meeting of the school year, the Grand Avenue PTSA bid farewell to retiring Principal Lewis Serra last Thursday.
The meeting began with a tearful speech by Serra, in which he explained that his "last seven years at Grand have been the most enriching and awarding experience."
Principal Serra is retiting after 41 years in the education system, 20 of which were dedicated to the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District. Faculty and parents at the meeting thanked Serra for making Grand such a wonderful place and called him an "inspiration" to the district.

Serra will be succeeded by Assistant Principal Kathleen Sapanski, the first woman principal Grand Avenue has had throughout its 40-year history.
The evening continued on with sharing important dates for parents. Award night will take place on June 7 and final exam week will begin on June 14. The PTA dinner will take place on June 14 and a BBQ for Grand Avenue's graduating class will occur on June 23. Bus transportation will be provided for all student events including extended bus hours on exam days. The Moving-Up celebration will be held on June 11. All tickets for the event went home with students last week.

The meeting concluded with the installation of the PTSA officers for the 2010-2011 school year. Positions appointed include: co-vice president, treasurer, hospitality, publicity chair, recording secretary and corresponding secretary.
The PTSA is asking for volunteers to help formulate an audit committee to complete books for the year. Anybody that wishes to help can contact the school at 992-1100 for further details.
