Bellmore-Merrick Schools Resume Wednesday

The North Merrick School District returned on Monday, the Merrick School District resumed on Tuesday, and the other three districts in the area will be joining suit on Wednesday.

This includes the North Bellmore School District, Bellmore School District and Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District.

North Bellmore Schools will be opened at normal time, and transportation will be running.

"We are pleased to report that buses will be running tomorrow and will make their regular pick-ups and drop offs," Superintendent Arnold Goldstein said. "Delays are expected for various reasons including blocked streets and downed traffic lights. We ask you to be patient until things return to normal. No child will be considered late due to a late bus."

After school activities are cancelled due to the impending storm that's set to arrive Wednesday.

"Hopefully, the storm tomorrow night will not prove to be as disruptive as feared," he added. "As always, we will work together as a community to deal with whatever occurs."

In Bellmore, Dr. Joseph Famularo sent an email to parents regarding the status of Bellmore Schools.

Shore Road School continues to be without power, so fifth graders will be relocated to Reinhard while sixth graders will move over to Winthrop Avenue School. All students will be picked up at their normal bus stops and transported to their respective schools.

There will also be a bus available for all of the Shore Road Walkers. The Shore Road walker stop will be behind the Shore Road Building in the rear parking lot near the gym.

There will be no lunch served, so send your child with food, and the Bellmore preschool program is cancelled Wednesday.

The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District is slated to return on Wednesday, although both John F. Kennedy High School and Merrick Avenue Middle School will be running on generator power.

"Those two buildings will use generator power; however, they will have heat, safety devices such as fire alarms, and lunch will be served," Superintendent Henry Kiernan said.

He also added that the high school buildings will be run as closed campuses until further notice and addressed the state of the buildings following Hurricane Sandy.

"We are fortunate that our school buildings have not sustained structural damage," Kiernan said. "During this time of hardship, our thoughts remain with all those affected by the storm. We hope that you and your loved ones are safe and look forward to re-opening school tomorrow."
