Bellmore-Merrick CHSD Recognizes Academic Achievements

The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District Board of Education recognized the outstanding achievements of the following students at their October Board meeting:

National Merit Scholarship Program:

Eric Fegan - Eric is an AP Scholar with Distinction. He is a member of the National Honor Society, the Spanish Honor Society, and the Science Honor Society. He is currently the president and four year member of the math team.

Jordan Liebman - Jordan is a member of the National Honor Society, Math Honor Society, Science Honor Society, and Italian Honor Society. He has also been a member of several clubs including Helping Our Planet Earth (H.O.P.E.), Athletes Helping Athletes, Class Government, Math Team and Math Mentorship Program, where he was a Gold medal winner in the Long Island Math Fair.

2012 National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Achievement Award in Writing:

Genevieve Dakota Balunis - Dakota is a junior at Mepham High School and a member of the National and Science Honor Societies. Dakota’s non-traditional style and creativity were reflected in the pieces she submitted and she has received numerous awards of excellence for her creative poems and various writings.

Corryn Chaimowitz - Corryn is a senior at Mepham High School. For her best writing sample, Corryn submitted a narrative piece that followed her future self looking back on her time at Mepham High School.  The piece truly captured the spirit and emotion of her high school years.

Brian Gimeno - Brian is a senior at Kennedy High School. Brian’s “Best Writing” piece is a speech in which Brian discusses the importance of learning and implores the listener to be open-minded by accepting others’ viewpoints as valid and by valuing what one has learned from others’ differences.   For his “Theme Writing”, Brian created a virtual tour of his world comparing his life to that of the Greek mythological figure Icarus.
                                                                   
Jordan Liebman - Jordan is a senior at Kennedy High School. He is a member of four honor societies as well as a several clubs and sports teams. Jordan’s “Best Writing” piece is a rhetorical analysis of a passage from Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter.  For his “Theme Writing”, which was a topic designated by the NCTE entitled “Your World”, Jordan was asked to create a virtual tour of his world for the reader.

2012 New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) – All State

Alana DeGregorio - Alana is a junior at Mepham High School and has been selected to the All-State Vocal Jazz. She is an outstanding scholar, musician, and athlete.

A three time All-County Flute and an All-County Chorus participant, she has made her mark at Mepham High School as a vocalist in the Concert Choir and Vocal Jazz group. She has also been a member of the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra, the nationally recognized Mepham Kickline team, a two time Reflections winner, and a Cultural Arts Award winner.

Eric Fegan - Eric is a senior at Kennedy High School and has been named an All-State Alternate for the Jazz Ensemble. A very talented musician, Eric is a four year member of Kennedy’s Jazz Ensemble and a two year member of the Pit Orchestra. He has been the piano accompanist for all three Kennedy choral groups.

Daniel Janis - Daniel is senior at Kennedy High School and has been named an All-State Alternate for the Symphonic Band.  He has been a four year member of Kennedy’s Jazz Band and is a conductor this year of the Chamber Orchestra.  He has been a member of the Drama Club for three years and is a member of the Spanish Honor Society.

Briana Krackow - Briana is a junior at Kennedy High School, and has been named an All-State Alternate for the Chorus. Briana is a member of the Science and French Honor Societies and has been a three year member of the Variety Choir, Girls Choir, Jazz Band, as well as the Varsity Tennis Team. She has received numerous awards for her talents, including All County Band, All County Chorus and All Conference Tennis.

Lauren Lamonsoff - Lauren is a junior at Calhoun High School and has been selected to the All-State Women's Chorus.  She is an active member of the Calhoun HS Concert Choir, serving as a Choir Robe Committee Chairperson.  She is also a member of the Calhoun On Tour Company, where she is the Assistant Crew Chief for Programs. Since the age of two, Lauryn has performed in 24 school and community theatre productions.

Sarah Losner - Sarah is a senior at Calhoun High School, and has been selected to the All-State Mixed Choir.  Sarah was also selected to All-State last year and performed with the All-State Women's Choir.  Sarah is a member of three honor societies and an active member of the Calhoun HS Concert Choir. She has attended the USDAN Center for the Creative and Performing Arts for six years, studying Video as Film Art, Photography, Drama, and Vocal Jazz.

Gregory Mora - Gregory is a junior at Kennedy High School and has been selected to the All-State String Orchestra. He is a member of the Science and French Honor Societies, as well as a member of the Key Club, Chamber Orchestra, and Pit Orchestra. He has participated in the Long Island String Festival and the All County Music Festival.

Ian Silverman - Ian is a senior at Calhoun High School and has been selected to the All-State Mixed Chorus. He is currently President of the Calhoun HS Choral Program after serving as Treasurer during his Junior Year.  In addition, Ian serves as Publicity Director, Program Designer, and Mentoring Director for Calhoun’s On Tour Company.  Ian is an active member of the Calhoun HS Concert Choir and show choir, Crescendo, where he is a Section Leader, as well as a three year mentor in Calhoun’s Express Yourself mentoring program for Special Education students.
