Bellmore Resident Wins $50K for Inventing New Printer

On April 25, Hofstra University awarded computer science major Michael Moskie, a Hofstra sophomore from Bellmore, and his teammate $50,000 as first place prize for their invention of a low cost 3D printer.

Moskie and his teammate, Shashank Sanjay, a junior computer science student from California, were challenged to design a new product that could be brought to market.

Participating teams were judged on an executive summary, a presentation and a proof of concept together with environmental impact statements and a projection of the likely market. Students spent six months working on their projects before making presentations before a panel of academic and professional judges

The competition at Hofstra was sponsored by CPX Interactive, an online advertising and marketing company founded by Michael Seimen, a 2000 graduate of Hofstra’s computer science program. Seimen, the CEO of CPX, explains his desire to sponsor the competition this way.

“Growing up on Long Island and attending Hofstra University are both key elements that have helped make me what I am today,” he said. “My own sense of entrepreneurship was honed by these experiences and it is truly my honor to be able to give back in this way. My hope is that this process kindles that same spirit in even a few future Hofstra alums and empowers them to become successful entrepreneurs in their own right.”
