Memorial Tree in Bellmore Felled by Sandy Being Replaced

Town of Hempstead holds ceremony to replace Veterans Memorial Tree at Bellmore Gardens Senior Center that stood for 20 years before Oct. 29 superstorm.

A memorial tree in Bellmore felled by Superstorm Sandy last fall is getting a new life this spring.

The Town of Hempstead held a plant dedication recently to replace a Veterans Memorial Tree that stood for 20 years at the Bellmore Gardens Senior Center before the Oct. 29 superstorm struck. When Hempstead officials learned of the fallen memorial, Supervisor Kate Murray immediately directed the Town’s Engineering Department to secure a replacement tree. The planting and dedication coordinated with the center’s already scheduled Memorial Day Ceremony.

“Unfortunately, this tree was felled, like so many, by Superstorm Sandy, but when we heard about it, we knew that we had to replace this significant tree," Murray said. “Our Veterans have done so much to protect us and our freedoms, replacing this tree dedicated to them is the least we can do."

The tree was originally purchased in 1991 by the Men’s Club of Bellmore and the Bellmore Senior Center. The tree was planted with a plaque dedicating it in memory of all Vietnam Veterans who gave their lives. In later years, the scope of the dedication was expanded to include all Veterans.

Hempstead officials said members of the senior center were devastated when the tree came down in Superstorm Sandy. The town will be replacing the original tree with a pear tree dedicated to all Veterans.
