Local Students Volunteer at Presidential Debate

Five Bellmore-Merrick students who attend Hofstra University will lend a helping hand at Tuesday’s Presidential Debate.

Miesha Dans, Madeline Fish, Brittany Mavio, Rebecca Langweber and Erin Starke represent the local area during the event. Patch caught up with Dans and Langweber to talk about their roles at the event.

Question: Where are you from and what high school did you go to?
Dans: I am from Merrick and I attended John F. Kennedy High school in Bellmore.
Langweber: I am from Merrick. I went to John F. Kennedy High School in Bellmore and I went to  college at Bentley University in Waltham, Massachusetts.

Q- What year are you at Hofstra and what is your major?
D- I am a sophomore at Hofstra and I am a double major in Athletic training and Exercise Science.
L- I am not an undergrad. I am a Law Student- Class of 2014.

Q- What kind of volunteer work will you being with the debate?
D- I am working in the credentialing center and am an usher in the debate hall.
L- I am working with MSNBC within the larger section of National Media.

Q- What made you decide to try and get involved with the debate?
D- This is history in the making and I wanted to be apart of it. It is also a once in a lifetime opportunity.
L- Getting involved with the debate was the perfect combination of political activism and volunteer work.  This opportunity provided me with a unique way of getting involved in politics from the inside out.  I have always found volunteering to be a true passion of mine.  Previously I have volunteered with Bellmore-Merrick EMS, and participated in a week long build with Habitat for Humanity in Dade County, Florida.

Q- What clubs/activities are you involved with at Hofstra?
D- I am a part of Alpha Theta Beta sorority.
L- I am the President of Hofstra Law School's Sports and Entertainment Law Society and a council member of the Professional Leadership and Student Development Council. I currently work as a law clerk at Stagg, Terenzi, Confusione & Wabnik, LLP, a corporate litigation firm in Garden City.

Q- What are your career aspirations?
D- My aspiration is to be a physical therapist.
L- In the future I am looking to do transactional law in the field of sports, preferably hockey.
