Although Hurricane Irene could still veer off course and spare Long Island its full force, now is the time to stock up on supplies, which are already running low at some stores, to make sure you're ready if we do get walloped this weekend. The worst part of the storm could easily be its aftermath, with roads flooded and power out for days, experts say, so here is what should be in your disaster supply kit (courtesy of the National Hurricane Center):
Water - at least 1 gallon daily per person for 3 to 7 days
Food - at least enough for 3 to 7 days
- non-perishable packaged or canned food / juices
- foods for infants or the elderly
- snack foods
- non-electric can opener
- cooking tools / fuel
- paper plates / plastic utensils
Blankets / Pillows, etc.
Clothing - seasonal / rain gear/ sturdy shoes
First Aid Kit / Medicines / Prescription Drugs
Special Items - for babies and the elderly
Toiletries / Hygiene items / Moisture wipes
Flashlight / Batteries
Radio - Battery operated and NOAA weather radio
Telephones - Fully charged cell phone with extra battery and a traditional (not cordless) telephone set
Cash (with some small bills) and Credit Cards - Banks and ATMs may not be available for extended periods
Keys
Toys, Books and Games
Important documents - in a waterproof container or watertight resealable plastic bag
- insurance, medical records, bank account numbers, Social Security card, etc.
Tools - keep a set with you during the storm
Vehicle fuel tanks filled
Pet care items
- proper identification / immunization records / medications
- ample supply of food and water
- a carrier or cage
- muzzle and leash
You can get these things without having to travel for miles. Pick up food, water and paper goods at Stop & Shop, Waldbaums, King Kullenor Pathmark. A discussion with Super Stop & Shop management in Levittown revealed that they've been stocking up on these types of goods since Tuesday in preparation for the hurricane, so they don't expect shortages.
Nab flashlights and batteries from Home Depot or try CVS. Grab a first aid kit and some toys and coloring books for the kids while you are there.
Need a new radio (and maybe some new video games or CD's)? Head to the electro-lover's paradise in Levittown, Best Buy. Need board games in case the power goes out? Target is right around the corner.
Don't want to buy? Head to your local library to take out some books and DVDs to help pass the time.
Need some new rain attire? Check Walmart in East Meadow, The Gap in Merrick or The Gap Kids in Wantagh to pick up some rain boots.
Fill your gas tank up at any of the area stations, including Sunoco, Gulf or Getty.
Don't forget your furry friend! Grab a leash for your dog or a carrier case for your favorite feline at Worldwide Puppies and Kittens in Bellmore.
You can also head to the Wantagh 5 &10 for everything from flashlights and batteries to homegoods and extra pots and pans.
