Hempstead Town Notebook: Dems Announce Candidates, Road Projects

Democrats Nominate 2011 Candidates

The Nassau County Democratic Committee nominated candidates for the 2011 races last week at the Cradle of Aviation in Garden City. Among those mentioned were the Town of Hempstead Democratic Committee's candidate slate.

Gary Port of West Hempstead is the Democratic candidate for Hempstead Town supervisor.

Wilton Robinson, Jr. of Roosevelt is seeking the Hempstead Town receiver of taxes post.

Steve Anchin, of Hewlett is running for Hempstead Town clerk.

Claudia Borecky of North Merrick is the Democratic candidate for the 5th Councilmatic District.

Town Announces Two Road Improvement Projects

• The Camp Ground Area Phase I, Merrick: The storm water drain and road improvement project includes Bangs Avenue, Kingsley Avenue, Webb Avenue, a portion of Wesley Avenue, a portion of Fletcher Avenue, Peck Avenue, Haven Avenue, Olin Avenue and a portion of Abbot Avenue in Merrick. The project will include improvement to the storm drain system, the construction of new concrete gutters, installation of pedestrian access ramps at all intersections, new asphalt pavement and the restoration of disturbed grass areas. The project will begin in June and should be completed by October.
• Montgomery Street - Carroll Street Area Part I, Bellmore: The road improvement project includes Carroll Street, Montgomery Street, Noel Court, Mona Court, Crown Street and Lindale Street in Bellmore. The project will include improvement to the storm drain system, the construction of new curbs, driveway aprons, installation of pedestrian access ramps at all intersections, new asphalt pavement and the restoration of disturbed grass areas. The project will begin in June and should be completed by October.

S.T.O.P. Day Scheduled for June 11

A S.T.O.P. (Stop Throwing Out Pollutants) Program day has been scheduled for June 11 between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. at Bay Park in East Rockaway.

The program is designed to provide area residents with a safe, environmentally sound method of disposal of the many hazardous materials found in the average home.

By bringing such toxins as antifreeze, drain cleaners and pesticides on any of the scheduled S.T.O.P. collection days, each family can make a significant contribution to the protection of the precious groundwater supply and the preservation of the bays and estuaries.

When bringing items, please follow these simple guidelines:

• Wrap leaking containers in newspaper and place in a plastic bag or larger container.
• Make sure all caps and lids are tight.
• Place items securely in a box for transportation.
• Use newspaper or cardboard to keep items from tipping or hitting each other.
• Place chemicals which may react with each other in separate areas of the vehicle.
• Do not leave products in a hot, unventilated vehicle for an extended period of time.
• Do not smoke near chemical products.
• Wear rubber gloves when handling containers.

Waste from commercial establishments, schools, churches, synagogues or home businesses will not be accepted. No commercial vehicles are permitted. Please note that electronic recycling items will only be collected at E-Cycle events.
