Democratic Legislators Rip Mangano on Sewage Plant

A weekly look in at the news from around Nassau County.

Nassau County Democratic legislators held firm Monday and asked once again for more oversight on additional borrowing for much-needed repairs at the county sewage treatment plants as pressure intensified to get the project started.

The Democrats, led by Kevan Abrahams, D-Freeport, accused County Executive Ed Mangano's administration of reckless finances and said that borrowing has to be done in phases and needs to be closely monitored.

Legislature Approves ‘Complete Streets’ Program

The county legislature earlier this week approved County Executive Mangano’s “Complete Streets” program, created to ensure that the county will consider all users of roadways, pedestrians, bicyclists and transit riders in the planning and design of new and current roadways.

The design principles include paved shoulders and bicycle lanes suitable to encourage bicycle riders. Other designs would improve sidewalks, signage, crosswalks, pedestrian signalization and traffic calming methods designed to allow pedestrian and motor vehicles to safely coexist.

County Announces Great Race on the Sea Weekend

The Great Race on the Sea, presented by Great South Bay Racing, Inc. will be held Aug. 23-25.  

  • Friday, Aug. 23: Seabreeze Park, Nautical Mile, Freeport: Race Boats on display from 4 p.m. - 10 p.m.

  • Saturday, Aug. 24: Long Beach Race boats on display from 4 p.m. - 10 p.m. at Kennedy Plaza in Long Beach. There will also entertainment, vendors, crafts and more.

  • Sunday, Aug. 25: First race begins at noon. Second race begins at approximately 2 p.m. All races can be viewed anywhere along the race route shore from Nickerson Beach to National Boulevard in Long Beach.

    • Awards Ceremony:  Trophies and awards will be presented Sunday at 6 p.m. at Nickerson Beach Park in the Nickerson West Building.
