Cuomo Calls on Feds to Renew Assault Weapon Ban

Governor says issue of gun control better tackled at the federal level. Gov. Andrew Cuomo in Monday called on federal lawmakers to reinstate a ban on assault weapons, though the governor said he also plans to tighten the state's regulations on such deadly weapons.

The governor's remarks, coming after Friday's tragic mass shooting in Newtown, CT, that left 20 first-graders and 7 adults dead, were made in a Monday press conference.

"There's no doubt that our (state) assault weapons ban, our assault weapons law, has significant flaws and significant loopholes," he said, according to the New York Post. "You basically grandfather in all magazines pre-1994. To me, it's just a glaring omission."

Cuomo added that the federal government is best suited to regulate weapons since so often guns cross state lines. A United States ban on assault weapons was allowed to expire in 2004, when politicians in Washington chose not to renew it.

As of Monday, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nevada, signaled he was open to putting up gun control laws for debate in the Senate.

Cuomo, Shumer, Feinstein, the forever opportunists. This debate has gone on for years but only gets regurgitated when we have a mass shooting. Diane Feinstein has brought back the proposal for an 'assault-gun' ban. You know, the same proposal that was already enacted in which she & the rest of congress allowed to expire? That's right, it EXPIRED!!! Let's re-enact it! Andy, Chuck, Dianne to the rescue! Can you say political opportunity on the backs of the Sandy Hook massacre??? News flash!!! The largest mass-school killing took place in the 1920's or 30's in Michigan. The nut job killed more people than anyone prior OR anyone since his heinous act. Ya' know how he did it? Nope, he didn't use a gun. He used dynamite. That's right, dynamite!!! The largest mass-school killing in China was carried out by a piece of human excrement using a sword and a machete. Do we ban those too??? How 'bout Jim Jones and his method of insanity? Should we have banned kool-aid? Guns don't kill people. PEOPLE KILL PEOPLE!!! Crazy people kill people. After all the knee-JERK reactions are over, only minor changes (to policy) will be made and all will be forgotten - just like dynamite in the last century. As for the media-driven term 'assault' rifles, are there any other kind? Really, think about it! Politics at it's best. Most unknowledgable folk - thanks to hysteria - think an assault rifle sprays bullets when the trigger is pulled. NOPE! Only one bullet at a time. The trigger must be depressed each time one wishes to fire a shot. Semi-automatic only means the spent cartridge is discharged an another bullet is 'automatically' place in the chamber. Imagine if a law-abiding, well- protected citizen was sitting in the theater in Colorado. Just imagine what he may have prevented. The same goes for an armed school security guard in Columbine or Sandy Hook. Soon - hopefully real soon, the Bellmore-Merrick district and many other others around this country will enact this necessary measure of protection. Remember, when guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns!!! God Bless the families of the victims!!!
