Coming Soon: Higher Taxes in Your First Paycheck of 2013

Fiscal cliff deal means a spike in Social Security payroll taxes in next paycheck… (but it would have been much higher without the deal)

Editor’s Note: This article was written and submitted by C. Zawadi Morris.

New Yorkers will see a spike in taxes taken out of their first paychecks of 2013 — a provision of the fiscal cliff deal that allows for a raise in Social Security payroll taxes. But the spike would have been much higher had it not been for the fiscal cliff deal, The New York Post reports.

The higher tax provision – 6.2 percent, up two points from the previous 4.2 percent – is a part of an effort to pay for the larger-than-life national debt and also to stimulate economic growth.

For families that make $50,000 or less, that means an extra tax payment of $579 a year, while families earning between $500,000 and $1 million will see an average rise of nearly $15,000 in their tax bills, according to the Tax Policy Center.

Other increases include:

* The expiration of Bush-era tax cuts, including the disappearance of the $1,000-per-child credit and higher investment and estate taxes.

* A 3.8 percent surtax on certain investment income for individuals earning more than $200,000 per year ($250,000 for couples) as part of Obama’s 2010 healthcare law.

* The tax rate on inherited estates will go up from 35 to 40 percent, though the first $5 million are exempt for individuals and $10 million for families.

Thanks for the warning being that my first paycheck for the new year is tomorrow (Thursday).
Paying big government salaries so they can blame everybody else but themselves for the tax and they spend game played for years.

Natalie. I am so sorry to read this. I too have a little 5 yr. old dog who I love desperately...Read More and I feel your pain. There is another website for an organization that does an amazing job finding lost pets. It's LOSTMYDOGGIE.COM There is a small fee, but they get signs up all over the area and have a phone system set up where everyone in the area of where she was lost gets a PHONE CALL ALERT message to watch for Molly. They leave a phone number and their website address so if anyone has seen her or has her they know where to call. Great system! Check it out! I've never used them, but I HAVE received calls myself recently on 2 separate lost dogs and I've seen the many photos they hung up in my area in Levittown for dogs lost within a few miles of this area. In other words, they DO what they say they will do to help find Molly. Just want you to know what is out there to help you bring Molly home. My grandkids go to school around Grand and Camp Ave. We'll be watching for her! God Bless and good luck! I'm sure she will be returned to you real soon!!
