Adoptable Animal of the Week: Meet Rambo

There's a lot to love about this big pup.

Name: Rambo

Case Number: #3787

Hi, I'm Rambo. I am a 1-year-old Saint Benard Mix who is currently staying at the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter as I wait for someone to adopt me.

I am large like a Saint Bernard, with the large paws but I definitely have some other breed mixed in. I am considered extra large, but that means there's just more of me to love!

I am a playful, exuberant dude. I love everyone, even the most unusual of strangers; I just need to learn to be more polite when meeting them. I like playing with people and simply love toys, but I can get over-excited. I'll need to learn some impulse control in order to play politely. In fact, I enjoy toys so much that I sometimes guard them from people. I'll need a patient, experienced adopter who can teach me how to share.

I am uncomfortable with some handling (paws, muzzle) and will need a patient adopter who will help me become more accepting of it. I will readily share my food with people, but I get a little more attached to my chewies.

I am very interested in making the acquaintance of other dogs, but I'm a rude, high-energy player so I hope you'll find me appropriate playmates who will play like I do and won't take offense. I should really learn some manners and impulse control when around other dogs.

I have already had some training (sit, down, shake) and am eager to learn more for a taste of my favorite treats (Yum!). I also need to learn to walk nicely on leash and not to be jumpy or mouthy!

Since I tend to be very high energy and can be jumpy and mouthy, I would be best in an adult-only, dog-experienced home with guardians who will provide structure and teach me impulse control and polite behavior.

If you are interested in adopting Rambo, contact the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter at (516) 785-5220 or come in for a visit. The shelter is located at 3320 Beltagh Avenue in Wantagh. Adoption hours are Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. All adopted pets will be spayed or neutered, will receive all required innoculations and will be microchipped, all free of charge.

From June 20 to Sept 20, the shelter is running its "Summer of Love" promotion, which means all adoptions are free!
