A police report obtained by CBS 2 showed that the police officer who fatally stuck a Bellmore woman in April 2011 was speeding.
According to police, the 7th Precinct officer was traveling eastbound on Merrick Road in his patrol car when he struck Sherry Lang, 63, at the intersection of Farmers Avenue.
Lang, who worked as a clerk typist at Shore Road School, was transported to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead.
CBS 2 reported that an investigation showed that the police car driven by Officer Ernie Thompson, was going almost 54 mph at the time of impact and had been traveling 60 mph just 20 seconds before Lang was struck on a rainy night with poor visibility. The investigation also found that the officer was not on an emergency run and was not using his lights or sirens.
Lang's husband, Howie Lang, expressed his rage to CBS:
“Actually I was quite, quite angry at that point. It wasn’t just being sad, it was anger. If it was a civilian that did that, they would take them and go crazy with it,” he said.
