During a press conference on Wednesday morning, police released that the couple involved in a shocking murder-suicide in North Bellmore Tuesday was identified as Thomas Hayes, 43, and his wife Sherrelle Hayes, 44.
Police said that Thomas Hayes stabbed his wife and then, hanged himself.
As reported on Patch Tuesday, the Hayeses' four children - ages 7 to 13 - returned home from school yesterday to find their mother dead on the floor of the laundry room and their father locked in an upstairs bedroom. While Thomas was alive when police removed him from the house, it was later confirmed the two had been victims of an apparent homicide-suicide.
Homicide Det. Sgt. Greg Lesmeister said that there were problems in the Hayeses' marriage.
"There is absolutely some indication of it," he said. "There was a marital discord."
Lesmeister said that Thomas Hayes was involved in an open larceny case involving the federal government and possibly made a plea not to serve jail time.
Police are still investigating Tuesday's incident.
